Barnoldswick Town’s hopes of a place in the last 32 in the FA Vase were dashed by a second half fight back from their West Yorkshire visitors.

A goal down at half time, Town drew level in the opening minute of the second half, but two further goals in the last 16 minutes clinched victory for the visitors.

The ground staff had worked tirelessly from Wednesday right up to almost kick off time to get the match on, and it all started off fairly well for Town as they pressed forward with Ashley Alderson shooting over from a Jack Overson cross after 15 minutes.

Ashley Flynn then brought a save out of Alex Woodcock in the Town goal two minutes later, and as Town continued to press for the opening goal, Mark Threlfall did well to get a cross in which was cleared out wide. Harry Thompson picked the ball up and crossed to find Stewart Airdrie, and he moved to his left but shot into the side netting from 6 yards out.

With Town pressing hard they left themselves stretched at the back and Woodcock had to race out of his goal to clear as two Emley forwards closed in. After 28 minutes Airdrie cleverly back heeled the ball forward over Liam Schofield and would have had a run on goal but was brought down. The resulting free kick was shot tamely wide.

Town did manage to get the ball in the net a minute later only for Lewis Jordan to be ruled offside, but disaster struck for Town on the half hour mark. Ashley Flynn fired in what looked like an easy shot for Woodcock to save, but it was deflected at the last minute to send it past the hapless Town keeper.

Town nearly equalised in the last minute of the half when Airdrie volleyed a shot just over the angle of the post and bar, but in a terrific start to the second half, they drew level. Emley kicked off and within 18 seconds Town had won the ball, and Mark Threlfall picked the ball up halfway inside the Emley half, and beat three defenders before shooting low inside Luke Herriott’s right hand post.

On the balance of play it was about the right score line, but Emley hit back and five minutes later Flynn ran at the Town defence before laying the ball off to Anthony Haigh, who fired wide of Woodcocks post. Straight down to the other end, an Ashley Alderson cross was dropped by Herriott who just managed to get hold of it at the second attempt with Neil Chapman closing in.

Airdrie then crossed from the left hand side of the Emley penalty area, Billy Priestley headed down but Herriott was equal to it tipping it round the far post, but 74 minutes Town fell behind, when a poor clearance out from Woodcock went straight to Ashley Flynn who easily scored to put Emley back in front.

Town hit back and Thompson did well to get in behind the Emley defence but he pulled the ball back too far behind the Town attacking players and was cleared.

With Town pushing forward, they were vulnerable to the counter, and twice in as many minutes Emley’s Haigh brought two brilliant saves out of Woodcock, before Emley skipper Paul Sykes rose unchallenged to head just the wrong side of the Town post.

But it was game over with 10 minutes left, when another poor Town clearance presented Emley substitute Doran Jordan with the easy task of side footing past Woodcock.

Town then made a double substitution with 5 minutes left, taking Alderson and Overson off and bringing on Aaron Hollindrake and Ben Gorman into the fray, and with a minute left Hollindrake should have reduced the arrears but somehow sidefooted over the bar from 3 yards out with no one challenging him.

In the end, it was a very disappointing result for Town, but you have to take your hat off to Emley and say that overall they deserved to go through. Good luck to them.
