Atherton Collieries have launched their first ever competition run solely for school children in the local community.

The club are inviting all local schools to participate in a ‘Design a Poster’ competition. The competition is open to any pupils currently at primary or secondary school, and all participants will receive a small gift for their entry, with a prize also available for the winner.

To enter, the children are being invited to create a piece of artwork representing Atherton or Atherton Collieries FC. The design could represent the current team, the history or future of the club, or even the history of Atherton itself.

All designs are to be submitted to the football club before 11am on Easter Monday, and all entrants will also be entered into a separate draw to be mascots for the match against Runcorn Town on 29th April.

Joe Gibbons, a member of the Colls Media Team, explained:

“At the open committee meeting shortly after Christmas, it was agreed that they would do more to involve local school children in the club, as well as aiming to set up a number of youth teams in preparation for next season.

“On Thursday morning, volunteers from the club travelled around every Primary School in the community, delivering a competition leaflet for each individual child.

“The concept of the competition has been a collaboration between first team players, volunteers and supporters.

“It is hoped that next week, some of the first team players will be able to give up their spare time and talk about the football club in greater depth, raising awareness of the team amongst the community’s youngsters.

“The winning design will appear on the matchday magazine, around the football club and on all forms of our social media. It will be selected by first team manager Michael Clegg and Chairman Paul Gregory”.
