The recent death of Portuguese footballing legend Eusebio resulted in many tributes and pictures of the great man being published - among them a previously unknown link to Cheadle Town's Park Road Stadium.

Town's Media Officer Stuart Crawford was browsing through posts on Twitter when he came across photos of Eusebio and the Portuguese national football squad at Park Road, which were taken prior to the start of the 1966 World Cup Finals tournament.

Stuart explained: "I noticed the pictures and reference to Cheadle, so I grabbed them straight away. They appeared to have been originally taken from Press Association archives and I would love to know if there are more pictures out there.

"During the group stages of the 1966 World Cup, Portugal were based in the North West as their group games and their quarter final against North Korea were played at Goodison Park. Apparently the Portuguese squad were based at a hotel nearby, and used Park Road for training.

"In those days our club didn't play here, it was the home ground of a team called Cheadle Rovers, and the pictures show that the school on the far side of the ground wasn't there in 1966.

"It's an interesting link to the past, and one which we weren't aware of until we came across the pictures".

After making contact with the Press Association, we were informed that a set of 13 pictures featuring Eusebio and the Portuguese squad training at Park Road are held in their archives. Unfortunately, all of the images held by the Press Association are rights managed so a fee would be involved for their use if they are going to be used editorially, and that being the case we can't share them with everyone via the League website.
