Emirates FA Cup Preliminary Round review

Sun 22nd August 2021 | FA Challenge Cup
By Gary Langley

In the Emirates FA Cup Preliminary Round we had eleven of our clubs taking part in nine fixtures. Three of those clubs finished the day needing to go again with replays, five of which had their journey end yesterday and three are through for sure to the next round.  We had drama, surprises and maybe even a couple of Cup upsets - All of this and we still have Northwich Victoria to take on Clitheroe this afternoon at Wincham Park.

So, what defines a cup upset? Generally a team beating another that either is from a higher division or is unexpected? Step forward Barnoldswick Town who’s eye catching 5-4 win at home to NPL raised a few eyebrows, except perhaps not from the team themselves? A Paul Turner hat-trick did much of the damage accompanied by a Gareth Hill Brace got them through.

Macclesfield FC have made some early waves this season and they travelled to the seaside to take on Squires Gate looking to progress. However, Squires Gate had ambitions of their own, in a game that was graced by ten goals, Squires Gate scored six of them, knocking out Macclesfield and perhaps causing a bit of an upset in the process?

Skelmersdale are the other NWCFL Club through for sure as they made light work of Irlam, winning 5-1 on the road and evoking memories of their run in last seasons competition.

Campion were knocked out yesterday but gained massive respect in the process, they ran NPL side Prescot very close losing 3-2 on the day but a result that was not set in stone until the referee blew the final whistle. Wythenshawe Town also brought their FA Cup campaign to a close but they ran 1874 Northwich close, a team who as we know are doing something special at the moment with the most successful spell in their history. Town were beaten 1-2 at home but they were by no means disgraced.

The same can be said for Prestwich Heys, Matt Barnes’ side who were beaten 0-3 by FA Vase holders, Warrington Rylands. Heys put in a battling performance but were beaten by that extra bit of quality that Rylands had on the day.

The clubs who have to go again are Avro, who drew 1-1 at home with Runcorn Linnets. Charnock Richard recorded a decent 1-1 draw on the road at Eccleshill United whilst in Anfield, Lower Breck held Mossley to a 2-2 draw at the ASCC, rather creditable considering that Mossley have a habit of knocking our clubs out of this competition in recent years. That will be a second consecutive midweek replay though for The Breck.

Congratulations to those who have gone through, commiserations to those who have not and good luck to those who need to ‘go again’ to sort their progress out in this, the 150th year of the Emirates FA Cup.

Good luck to Northwich Victoria for this afternoon as they take on Clitheroe at Wincham Park. If you are heading along there today, the kick-off is at 3pm.
