The draw for the Second Qualifying Round of the Emirates FA Cup have been released by the FA this lunchtime.
Last season we had three clubs reach this stage of the competition, but this year it is potentially only one, with Charnock Richard having to overcome Runcorn Linnets in a replay tomorrow evening to make it our only side through.
Saturday's tie saw Luke Power put Charnock ahead on 26 minutes before Lewis Doyle equalised from the spot on the hour for Linnets. Adam Moseley scored his first goal for the club to put the NPL West side ahead with 13 minutes to play, but Jordan Darr secured a replay with a goal on 86 minutes.
That meant a replay tomorrow evening, and the winners of the tie will be at home to Chorley in the Second Qualifying Round.
It's an amazing tie for Charnock and they won't need any added incentive to win the replay now. Chorley play in the National League North and just 2.5 miles separate the two clubs. To the best of our knowledge, the two teams have never met in a competitive tie, certainly since Charnock stepped up to the NWCFL. Prior to that, with Charnock being a West Lancashire League side, it is doubtful they met at First Team level.
Chorley have reached the "Proper" rounds of the FA Cup on 11 occasions in the past, most recently in 2020/21 when they reached the Fourth Round having knocked out Wigan Athletic and Peterborough United before beating Wayne Rooney's Derby County. They were eventually beaten 1-0 at the last 32 stage by Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Charnock's run in the competition is quite remarkable. In seven seasons of entering, they have never reached the Second Qualifying Round but this is the fifth successive year that they have reached the First Qualifying Round!
There are eighty Second Qualifying Round ties and these are scheduled to take place on or around Saturday 16th September. The prize fund is £3,375 for winning teams and £1,125 for losing teams.
