History

Origins and Early Development Brereton Social Football Club, commonly known as “The Social,” is a longestablished English football club based in Brereton, a suburb of Rugeley in Staffordshire. Founded in 1899, the club has been a central part of the local community for well over a century, reflecting both the sporting passion and social fabric of the area.The club’s origins are closely tied to the industrial heritage of Brereton. At the time of its formation, the region was heavily influenced by coal mining, with many local residents employed in nearby collieries. Football clubs such as Brereton Social were formed not only for competition but also as a means of recreation and community bonding for working-class people.In its early years, Brereton Social primarily participated in local matches and informal competitions. Like many clubs of its era, detailed records from the early decades are limited, but the club steadily established itself within Staffordshire football. Over time, it developed a reputation as a resilient and communitydriven team.A major step forward came in the 1968–69 season, when the club joined the West Midlands (Regional) League Division One, marking its entry into more structured competitive football.football. Demonstrating the strength of local support, Brereton Social was reformed just one year later, continuing its footballing journey.The early 2000s saw renewed progress. The club achieved a runners-up finish in 2005–06, highlighting a period of competitive improvement. This success led to a move into the Midland Combination Premier Division, although the club later faced relegation and eventually resigned from the league during the 2010–11 season.Following this period, Brereton Social rebuilt at a more local level, competing in Staffordshire leagues. This era has been characterised by steady development and a renewed emphasis on grassroots football. The club has also expanded its structure, supporting multiple teams across different age groups and maintaining strong links with the local community.In recent years, Brereton Social has enjoyed a resurgence in form. Notable achievements include strong league performances, cup finals, and promotions within the Staffordshire County Senior League system. Directions: From the M6 J5, take the A5 towards Cannock / Brownhills. Go straight on at the first roundabout and at the second, take the second exit on the A460 towards Rugeley. Follow this road into Rugeley, and you will come to a roundabout called Globe Island. Take the third exit towards the station / Litchfield. Follow this road, and after you pass the Esso garage, take the second left into Armitage Lane (just after the traffic lights). The ground is down this lane on your right hand side.
