Lightning Strikes Twice For Budgie

Congleton Town’s Vice Chairman Steve (Budgie) Burgess, is now recovering after missing the Bears’ game against Runcorn Linnets on Tuesday through being involved in his second car accident in a matter of weeks.

Steve has been cursed by bad luck over the past few weeks, as Congleton Secretary Ken Mead explained.

“We mustn’t talk to Steve about lightning striking twice or ‘things happen in threes’”, said Ken.

“Having had a transit van slam in the back of his car while stationary a few weeks back, he was glad to be back at work from Easter Tuesday. His job involves driving to see customers, and as a result of the accident he has also suffered from neck and leg pains that have made him miss matches, and his car was subject to major repairs of £4000.

“So spare a thought when on Tuesday, just 200 yards from the spot on the A34 where he was first stuck, a van clipped the kerb in the outside lane, veered across the carriageway, slammed into a parked car which overturned the car and spun it into Budgie’s path.

“His car was written off and he ended up taking a trip in an ambulance to Wythenshawe Hospital in Manchester. He has had to endure additional pains, and the wait to see the doctor after being seen in triage meant he missed the Bears home game against Runcorn Linnets.

“He missed a cracking game, a great advert for NWCFL football, the biggest home attendance for the Bears this season and left his comrades having to make hurried arrangements to cover the range of duties he carries out on match day. Everything was patched up, but post match activities were delayed a little.

“In his words “It’s been a miserable year”. It was quietly pointed out that we are only one quarter of the way through it and things always happen in threes. Watch out on the A34 when he gets back into the driving seat!”
