A Memorable Night At Runcorn Town For James

Runcorn Town's James McShane had a night to remember on Monday, when his side hosted Alsager Town at the Pavilions.

Shortly before kick off, James was presented with the Premier Division Player Of The Month award for August, by League Registrations Secretary John Cowley.  In the 49th minute of the game, he opened the scoring for Town to set them on the road to a 2-0 win, and then after the full time whistle he was presented with a special award from the club to recognise his goalscoring efforts over the past four years.

Monday night's goal followed on from a landmark strike one week earlier on Monday 5th September, when James broke clear of the St Helens defence in the 88th minute, advanced to the edge of the box and unleashed an unstoppable shot past the visiting keeper to seal a 4-2 victory for Town.

The goal was symbolic as it was his 100th goal for the club, but what makes it special is the fact that James accomplished this feat in just 109 games. It's a phenomenal ratio at any level of football, with James taking full advantage of the numerous chances that his team mates create for him during games - something he is quick to recognise.

26 year old James made his debut for the club in one of Peter Nolan's last games as manager at Newton in October 2007. He hit the winner in a 2-1 win in the West Cheshire League's Pyke Cup wearing an unfamiliar number 6 shirt.

He also hit the winner in the next game, a 1-0 win at Vauxhall Motors Reserves, before being handed the number ten shirt for the first time by stand in manager Eddie Smith at Castrol Social where he netted in a 5-1 win.

His first hat-trick for the club came in his 5th match, an 8-0 victory over Ashville. He went on net another four hat-tricks that season - at home to New Brighton in a 4-2 win in November, at home to Newton in a 4-2 win in February 2008 and at away at Christleton in March 2008. His other hat-trick came in a cameo appearance for the Reserves in a 4-3 win away at Focus, and he finished the season as leading scorer with 32 goals from 35 games.

After missing the entire 2008/09 season, he returned against Heswall in a West Cheshire League match in September 2009, scoring within 30 seconds of entering the field of play as a second half substitute.

Appearances this season were scarce as he made just 15 appearances, seven as substitute, and scored 6 goals. He did play several times for the Reserves, and helped set two club records in a game against Southport Trinity Reserves in February 2010. The game ended in a club record 14-0 win for Town, with James setting a club record of most goals in a game with seven.

With Town stepping up to the North West Counties League in 2010/11, James stepped up to have his most impressive season to date. He scored twice in both of Town's opening two matches to move to the top of the goalscoring charts, a position he held for the rest of the season.

He found scoring a hat-trick quite elusive despite scoring a brace on eight occasions, but it finally arrived against Daisy Hill in February 2011 in a 9-1 win. This was followed up with two hat-tricks in the space of five days in a 5-0 win over Ashton Town and a 5-1 victory at Cheadle Town. He finished the season with 43 goals from 44 appearances.

Winning promotion to the Premier Division has not stopped James, with goals continuing to flow regularly. In Town's opening eight games he scored 10 goals as he scored in every game in August to win the league's Player of the Month award for the month.

After not scoring against Congleton in the FA Cup, James opened the scoring against St Helens Town to move on to 99 goals, before celebrating his 100th with minutes to go.

James is quick to pay tribute to the part his team mates have played in his success.

I enjoy playing here, because we have a lot of creative players who create lots of chances for me.  We have a good understanding within the team, and they play to my strengths which is a big help.

It's nice to win goal scoring awards, and it would be nice to finish top scorer in the division again this season, but really I'm just concentrating on enjoying my football at the moment and this is a great club to be at.

I am really happy here, the team bonding in the squad is great, and we have a brilliant committee running the club.

It was nice to receive the award from the club after the game, it wasn't something that I knew anything about.  They just sprung it on me when I came into the clubhouse after the game.  It had been a good night anyway, and that just finished it off nicely.”

Like any manager who has a prolific goalscorer at his disposal, Town manager Simon Burton is delighted to have James as part of his squad.

James is a pleasure to work with.  He has excellent movement, is great at creating space and he works hard for the team.  His all-round work rate is terrific.

You know you always have a chance of winning when you have James in the team, and we have just got to hope that we can keep him at the club as long as possible.  But, if he keeps scoring at his present rate, we realise that might be difficult.”
