Padiham Football Club and Padiham Sports Club have been successful in grant application bids to Burnley Borough Council's Connecting Communities Fund.

The fund was set up to help groups that make a difference in the Padiham and Hapton areas, and both clubs have been awarded £2000 each from a total available fund of £20,000.

A number of diverse organisations also benefitted from the Connecting Communities Fund, among them Padiham Town Council, Hapton Parish Council, Hapton Community Building Committee, Stone Moor Bottom Community Group and a group called Beauty in the Universe, an organisation that goes into schools and gives talks on astronomy.

Both Padiham Football Club and Padiham Sports Club are grateful for the help given during the bid process by the Connecting Communities Officer Tracy Noon and Councillor Jeff Sumner.

Meanwhile, Padiham Sports Club are hoping to safeguard the future of the Arbories Memorial Sports Ground as a sports venue, through a new campaign led by the Charity Fields Trust.

HRH Prince William has become the Patron of the campaign, which is aimed at protecting 2,012 outdoor recreational spaces and facilities across the UK by 2012, the year of The Queen's Diamond Jubilee and the London Olympics.

With outdoor recreational spaces continually under threat of development, the scheme aims to safeguard hundreds of outdoor venues in perpetuity for future generations, in celebration of the Diamond Jubilee and as a permanent tribute to the present Queen.

Padiham Sports Club have contacted Burnley Borough Council and asked them to nominate The Arbories as an area the Council would be happy to protect as a "Queen Elizabeth II Field".

Padiham Secretary Alan Smith said: "The Sports Club feels that nominating the Arbories for recognition would represent an excellent and cost effective way for Burnley Borough Council to mark both the Diamond Jubilee and the London 2012 Olympics in the area."
