Weekend 5 in the NWCFL saw the First Qualifying Round of the Isuzu FA Vase as well as a handful of league games.

Isuzu FA Vase

The action started on Friday night with two games taking place. Wythenshawe needed a goal six minutes into stoppage time to draw 3-3 with Cheadle Heath Nomads, with Wythy then winning 4-3 on penalties. It was an even later leveller in the other, with South Leeds scoring in the eighth minute of additional time to deny Barnton, that ending 2-2. No matter... Barnton won the shootout 4-2!

One of the highlight from the Saturday Vase games was the 5-1 away victory by First Division North side at NCEL Premier side Frickley Athletic, one of four games where teams beat another from a higher step. The second came at Wolverhampton Sporting Community who beat Hellenic Premier League side Westfields 1-0, with another at Stafford Town who beat Midland League Premier Division side Tividale 1-0. The final "giant killing" came at Glossop North End, with Bacup Borough winning 4-1 from the spot after a 1-1 draw.

Nelson put their league worries behind them with a 4-1 win over Northern League side Alnwick Town, with Garstang also winning against a Northern League side as they beat Prudhoe Youth Club 2-0. Thornton Cleveleys were another as their first ever Vase game ended in victory as they beat Chester-le-Street Town 2-1.

Another Vase debut was MSB Woolton, but they went down 4-2 at Burscough, one of onky five all-NWCFL games. Fulwood Amateurs were another side having a Vase debut, and they beat AFC Blackpool 3-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw. Haughmond picked up their first win of the season with a 3-1 victory at Market Drayton Town, with Charnock Richard beating Ashton Athletic 2-0.

Stockport Town romped to a 3-0 win over Selby Town, with Euxton Villa beating Worsbrough Bridge Athletic 2-1. It was also 2-1 at Alsager Town with an injury time winner giving them victory over Redditch Borough. Colne won 1-0 at Seaham Red Star, with fellow East Lancashire side Barnoldswick Town beating Birtley Town 3-2.

Holker Old Boys are through once more after a 2-0 win over Ryton & Crawcrook Albion. It was the same scoreline at 1874 Northwich with Prestwich Heys progressing. Padiham and City Of Liverpool both needed penalties to progress, the Storks after a 2-2 draw at home to Sunderland RCA with the Purps after a 1-1 draw at Swallownest.

Penalties were also the undoing of some clubs after grinding out draws over 90 minutes. Doncaster City progressed after a 1-1 draw at Abbey Hey, with Penistone Church drawing at FC St Helens by the same scoreline. Litherland REMYCA were held 2-2 by Rossington Main before winning their shootout.

Stockport Georgians were unlucky with Maltby Main scoring in the fifth minute of stoppage time to win 2-1. It was the same story at Squires Gate, with NCEL Premier leaders Tadcaster Albion winning 2-1 with a goal two minutes into stoppage time.

Telford Town suffered their first defeat of the season with a 5-3 loss at Gresley Rovers, with Pilkington losing 3-2 at Brigg Town. Maine Road lost 2-0 at Crowle Colts, with Cammell Laird 1907 losing 1-0 at Liversedge. Steeton lost 2-0 at Park View AFC, with Wellington beating Shawbury United 5-1. Dudley Town beat Wolverhampton Casuals 2-0.

Premier Division

There was one game with Ramsbottom United beating FC Isle of Man 4-1.

First Division North

Similarly there was just one game with Droylsden racing into a 3-0 first half lead at Daisy Hill. The home team pulled it back to 3-2 but could not find the equaliser.
