Five Things We Learned - Gameweek 19

1. The Vase continues

And the NWCFL still have some flag-flyers in the mix. And, what's better, there will still definitely be at least one NWCFL team left in the next round, as Premier Division Bury AFC will take on First Division North side Holker Old Boys. One of those two teams will inevitably progress.

Other games involving NWCFL teams are as follows - AFC Liverpool will travel to Eccleshill United, who dumped out Longridge Town on penalties in the last round; West Didsbury and Chorlton will host Horden Community Welfare, who overcame Darwen FC at the weekend, and Congleton will entertain Pinchbeck United.

2. Congleton's evergreen man

In the NWCFL Premier Division, Congleton Town have played 1 less game than 6 of their contemporaries, and 2 games less than 3 of the other teams in their league. This comes from their impressive Vase run, as well as a small dally into the FA Cup which saw them make the BBC Red Button.

With all those games in different competitions coming and going, there has been one player who's been hard to avoid watching at the Cleric Stadium - Ethan Hartshorn. 33 games in all competitions is not only more than anyone else who plays for the Bears, but more than any other player in the NWCFL as a whole so far this season.

3. Youth is the key for FC Isle Of Man

FC Isle of Man have had a fairly rocky season in the NWCFL Premier Division after last campaign's promotion heroics. Being in the bottom half of the table for the majority of the season so far has facilitated a managerial change, but they looked more like their old selves in their recent win over Barnoldswick Town.

The win at Barlick came when the decisive goal was scored by U21's regular Thomas Creer, in a move that saw 2 other of the youth players piece together some excellent football. Perhaps James Bond was wrong, and youth CAN BE a guarantee of innovation.

4. Chadderton and Garstang are getting to know one another very well

Within the last 2 weeks, NWCFL Division One North sides Chadderton and Garstang have played out two very different games against one another. The first was one you'd be sorry to miss - 9 goals, 5 for Chadderton and 4 for Garstang, saw a contender for game of the season take place at the Falcon Fire Stadium.

That was 2 Tuesday's ago. The reverse fixture at Garstang's Riverside ground came on Saturday, and yielded the same outcome, but with a much more innocuous score. Adam Dale and Declan Hacking helped Chadderton pick up a 2-0 win and 6 points from 6 in the league over their opponents.

5. Avoiding going South in Division One South

In recent weeks, I, personally, have bore witness to both Stafford Town and Cheadle Heath Nomads in action when they have both travelled to Abbey Hey. Nomads did so on Tuesday just gone, and their result, coinciding with Stafford Town's has seen them slip back into the drop zone by more of a margin than they would like.

Stafford have won 2 on the bounce in the league now, with Jack Grimshaw and Reece Mason netting against Barnton and Grimshaw scoring the decider against Eccleshall. This has left them 4 points clear of the dotted line, and leaves Nomads, under their new gaffer Rory Fallon, with work to do.
