The end of the road to Wembley for Irlam
Irlam's hopes of joining Northwich Victoria in the last eight of the Buildbase FA Vase were ended by Chertsey Town on Saturday.
But amidst the disappointment, there's still plenty to be positive about. It was the furthest the club has ever gone in the competition, and the attendances at Saturday's game and for the tie in the previous round were their highest of the season.
Some great memories have been built along the way and some decent prize money banked too, so once the dust settles manager Michael Dodd and his squad can reflect on a job well done.
Another goal fest between Abbey and Road
Earlier in the season, Maine Road beat Abbey Hulton United 6-5 in a thriller at Brantingham Road.
It was always going to be a tough act for both sides to deliver a repeat performance, but Saturday's return game certainly didn't disappoint.
Abbey built a 3-0 lead by the 52nd minute, but Road hit back, scoring five times without reply to clinch a remarkable 5-3 win.
Games between the two are over now for this season, but future meeting will have a lot to live up to.
Cup cheer for Rylands
As well as heading the pack at the top of the First Division South, last week also saw Rylands break new ground by reaching the semi-final of Liverpool FA Senior Cup for the first time.
Their 4-1 win over AFC Liverpool means they are now the league’s sole remaining representatives in the competition, and they can now look forward to a big semi-final against either Prescot Cables, or the winners of the ties between Widnes and Everton, or Southport and Tranmere Rovers.
Cup or league, the good news just keeps on coming down at the Rylands Recreation Club.
A good night for Stone Old Alleynians
Despite losing to Stoke City Under 23s on Tuesday night, it was still a good night for the club and for Life President Dave Mardling in particular.
Dave said in the programme notes that the night was one of the proudest moments of his life, as he has been a lifelong Stoke City supporter for over 65 years, watching heroes such as Stanley Matthews and Gordon Banks through to the present day.
With a season’s best attendance of 280 at the game, and only losing 1-0 to full time professionals, it was a good night for the club too, and let’s hope that some of those who made a visit to Wellbeing Park for the first time will be tempted to return.
Reward for hard work by Ammies fans
Wythenshawe Amateurs' 2-1 win over Cammell Laird 1907 on Tuesday was a reward for the club volunteers who worked over the weekend to clear snow off the pitch at Hollyhedge Park.
The victory, which kept the club in touch at the top of the First Division South, was one that had looked unlikely given the state of the pitch at the weekend, as the picture below shows.
But the willing hands of those turned up to help played their part in ensuring the club were able to stage the game and pick up three points, and as club Secretary John Cotton said: "Where would grassroots football be without volunteers like this ?"
