Happy New Year for Vics
One team that have begun 2019 looking like they mean business is Northwich Victoria.
In preparation for the Buildbase FA Vase tie at Newcastle Benfield on Saturday, manager Steve Wilkes had the squad in training on New Year's Day as well as the regular Thursday evening session, and the team responded with an outstanding performance and a 3-2 win against a team that had not lost a game since mid-October.
Vics have enjoyed many memorable moments in their long history, and with a place in the last 16 of the Vase secured, this season's sojourn in the competition is shaping up to deliver more great memories.
Historic day for Irlam
The biggest day in Irlam's history went very much as everyone would have hoped, with Michael Dodd's men cruising through to the Fifth Round of the Buildbase FA Vase with a comfortable 4-0 win over Cadbury Athletic.
Appeals from the club for the locals to turn out and support them were answered, and in front of the biggest attendance of the season, the team delivered a performance that should certainly encourage the floating local support to come down again.
Old Alleynians goal machine keeps on going
Mention has been made on these pages in the past about Stone Old Alleynians' goalscoring exploits, and their scoring rate shows no sign of slowing down.
They have not failed to score less than two goals in a game since mid-November, and Saturday's 7-0 win over New Mills now means they have scored 35 goals in their last eight games .
It's little wonder that they are top of the form guide in the First Division South and are now just six point off the top of the table.
Heys back on track
One team that have discovered the winning habit once again are Prestwich Heys, whose last gasp win over Carlisle City on Saturday was their seventh league win in a row.
Rated among the pre-season title favourites, Heys had been slightly off the pace after back to back defeats in mid-November, but with their rediscovered momentum now having moved them to within nine points of the leaders Longridge Town, the signs are that Heys will be very much in the shake up for promotion at the end of the season.
Consistency the key at Burscough
Arguable one of the most improved teams in the league this season are Burscough, whose 4-1 win at West Didsbury & Chorlton on Saturday extended their unbeaten league run to nine games.
The Linnets now sit fifth in the table, and memories of last season's struggle to beat relegation are now long forgotten.
