League Vice-President Bob Eccles is remaining in upbeat mood as he continues his intensive treatment for cancer.

Bob is presently attending the Royal Preston Hospital five days a week up until the 9th April, and says he is progressing as well as can be expected.

"I'm very tired and getting a bit of discomfort, but doing well with the radiotherapy", he said.  "The staff at the hospital are absolutely fabulous, I can't praise them enough.

"The difficult thing is that I feel tired a lot.  I'd like to be walking and driving a bit more, but I tire so quickly it's difficult.  The hospital come and pick me up and drop me off every day, because I've been told it's too far for me drive when undergoing this sort of treatment".

For someone who has always been active and likes walking and gardening, Bob is finding his tiredness extremely frustrating.

"I do like walking, and the other morning I decided to set off with my walking stick in the direction of Darwen Tower, which I've walked up to loads of times over the years, but I had to turn back as I was feeling tired soon after I set off.  That's one target I've set myself though - once I'm feeling better I'm determined I'll walk right up to the Tower again".

In the meantime, Bob spends his time resting at home under the watchful eye of his wife Rosemary, and has been cheered up by the many messages he has received since his illness became known.

"It's been great to hear from my many friends and colleagues from around the league who have phoned me, and I'd also like to say a big thank you to everyone who has sent cards and letters.  I promise I'll reply to them all when I'm feeling a bit better.

"I'm halfway through the treatment now, and once the treatment finishes there will be some assessments and I'll hopefully know the outcome in the middle of May.  I'm staying positive about it all and we'll see how I get on".
