Promotion Party For AFC Blackpool
Sat 16th April 2011 | AFC Blackpool | By Ian Templeman
Congratulations to AFC Blackpool, who clinched promotion to the Premier Division this afternoon with a 2-0 win at Norton United.
Two second half goals from Niall Cummins clinched victory for the Seasiders, who can now look forward to hosting Premier Division football at the Mechanics next season.
The club have waited a long time for success to come their way, as they have been in the bottom division of the league since season 1986-87, apart from one season in the old Division One in season 1992-93.
AFC Blackpool Chairman Tommy Baldwin said: It's great to get promotion, it's been a long hard slog. You can't take anything away from the players, from day one they've been together as a team and worked hard to get where they are. Every one of them fully deserves it.
We've waited eighteen years to get here and if there was a message I wanted to give out it would be to say to every manager and chairman in the league – take your time and get the club right. Forget about paying players and be held to ransom by players asking for more money. Stick it out, have a bit of nerve and one day the success will come, as we have proved here at this club.
I'm really pleased for our manager Stuart Parker. He's been here for about ten years in all, and has been through some really rough times and been on the wrong end of some really bad results, but he has stuck with us. I've seen a lonely man in that dugout over the years and I'm glad to see a smile on his face now. Stuart and Garry Hargreaves have turned this club around and I will always be thankful to them for that.
It's great to be looking forward to playing in a higher division, but we will miss many of the people around the clubs in the First Division, who over the years have become familiar faces and good friends.
The First Division in this league must be the hardest division to get out of and that is shown when the teams who get promoted usually do very well in the Premier League. We hope that we can live life in the Premier Division with the same enjoyment we have had in the First Division and we wish all the very best of luck to those clubs who we leave behind.”
