Premier Division Formby have appointed former Bootle Reserve team manager Michael Joyce as manager until the end of the season. Joyce takes over from caretaker manager Tony Rowan, whose only game in charge was the 4-10 defeat at the hand of Atherton LR.

According to The Formby Times newspaper Joyce was due to take charge of The Squirrels in Tuesday evening's Premier Division derby encounter with Bootle, which was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch. He will now hope to make his debut at Silsden on Saturday, weather permitting.

Joyce played in the defeat at Atherton L.R and speaking to The Formby Times, he said: "Every single player left when Gary Martindale quit and this current squad of players have not been together very long. I think it is unfair to judge the players on that Atherton LR game, we went 1-0, 2-1 and then 3-2 up and a couple of refereeing decisions didn't help.

"I'm not under any illusions as to our situation but hopefully I can help between now and the end of the season."

His opening match in charge could not be a more important one. Formby are currently third from bottom in the Premier Division and victory would see them leapfrog Saturday's opponents.
