History

History

Litherland Remyca were formed in 1959 as St Thomas football club and were based in the Seaforth area of Liverpool. Bootle YMCA then became the clubs base with the name being changed to Bootle Church Lads Brigade or Bootle CLA for short. The team began playing in the Christian League and Bootle JOC before being accepted to the I Zingari League, but not before another name change to REM Social, after the working men’s club of the same name started financing the club.

A year later the two previous names were merged to create REMYCA United. REMYCA were successful during the early years in the I Zingari League and earned a reputation for playing attractive football with the club winning the I Zingari Challenge Cup in 1976, before being invited to be inaugural members of the I Zingari Premier League. The step up warranted an improvement in facilities so the club left it long-term home of Moss Lane for Maghull high school.

The 1987/88 season saw the club win the I Zingari League for the first time and in 1991 they won the Lancashire FA Amateur Cup beating Wythenshawe Amateurs. The 1990s saw the club enter its most successful ever period as the club won the I Zingari Premier League and cup double in three consecutive seasons, 1993/94, 1994/95 and 1995/96, with another Challenge Cup thrown in at the conclusion of the 1998/99 season. REMYCA then sought entry to the Liverpool County Combination League, as they looked to build on the success of the 1990s.

They were accepted joining the newly reformed Division Two for the 2001/02 season but the club resigned following the disbanding of Division Two and joined the Liverpool County Premier League in 2006. Remyca had a successful first season winning the league with 27 wins from 32 games and scoring 120 goals in the process. TIop four finishes followed over the next few seasons as the club were promoted again this time to the Premier Division in 2010. Performances in the Premier division slowly improved over the years as the Remy began to finish near the top of the table.

In 2013 the club changed its name to Litherland Remyca. The teams first season as Litherland Remyca in the Liverpool County Premier League was also its last as they finished fifth and weee accepted into the North West Counties Division 1. The first two seasons in the NWC Division 1, Remyca finished a respectable 9th, before a 3rd and 2nd place finish saw them promoted to the Premier Division in 2017/18. That promotion season was amazing for Remyca where they finished with 99 points and were pipped to the title by Silsden who amassed 103 points.

REMYCAs debut season in the Premier Division seen them achieve a respectable 15th before the seasons 19/20 and 20/21 were interrupted by Covid Lockdowns. At the start of the 21/22 campaign Remyca were anchored to the foot off the table after 10 consecutive defeats. Colin McDonald made the jump from player to manager and slowly started a fantastic turn around and a good run of form in the latter half of the season seeing Remyca stay up on PPG thanks to a 2-0 win over Vauxhall Motors on the final day. In the following season Remyca got off to a disappointing start sitting towards the bottom of the table for most of the first half of the season, however after an away win in the Isle of Man, fortunes changed and they climbed away from danger with a 12 match unbeaten run achieving there highest ever finish of 10th in the NWCFL.

The 2023/24 season was a period of consolidation within the Premier Division with Remyca finishing 12th in perhaps one of the most challenging North West Counties League seen for many years. At the end of the season, Colin McDonald stood down from the managers role after two and a half years in charge.

Again, the Remy looked to within for a replacement with Luke Denson stepping up to take on the challenge of leading the club into the new 24/25 season. Luke has brought with him a wealth of experience in non league, previously playing for AFC Fylde, Colwyn Bay, City of Liverpool and Burscough. Remy finished last seasons campaign 19th out of 24.
