A first half goal from Formby player-manager Gary Martindale clinched victory for Formby in a close fought encounter at Altcar Road.

For their part, Bacup had the pick of the chances over the course of the 90 minutes and were unhappy when they appeared to have grabbed a last minute equaliser, only to be denied by the assistant referee flagging for offside.

Bacup enjoyed the best of the early first half possession, and Haydn Paul came close on 20 minutes when he chased a through ball, rounded the keeper but saw his shot blocked on the line by a covering defender.

Two minutes later Formby player-manager Gary Martindale was played through on goal, but Bacup keeper Matthew Wrigley reacted quickly to race from goal and make a good blocking save.

On the half hour mark, an angled shot from Bacup's Chris Ogunyode just shaved the far post, but it was Formby who broke the deadlock eight minutes before the break.  Former Everton midfielder John Paul Kissock curled a right wing free kick into the penalty area and player-manager Martindale had time and space to fire a first time volley into the corner of the net.

In the early stages of the second half, Daniel Cocks and Chris Ogunyode came close with shots from the edge of the box, and Bacup enjoyed plenty of possession as the home side were content to soak up pressure.

As the game moved into the last ten minutes, Daniel Cocks twice beat the Formby offside trap to race through on goal, but on each occasion was denied by fine saves from home keeper James McGuire.

At the other end, a break down the left led to a cross into the box being met on the volley by Formby's Paul O'Hare, but the ball flew wide of the target.

With two minutes to go, the game's major talking point arose when Bacup's Chris Ogunyode latched on to a through ball and coolly tucked a shot into the corner of the net past the advancing keeper, only to see the effort ruled out for offside.

Furious protests from the Bacup players ensued, and Ogunyode received a yellow card for voicing his opinion to the assistant referee whose flag ruled out the effort.

One last long range shot from substitute Luke Hargreaves was well saved by Formby keeper McGuire, before the referee blew the full time whistle to signal Formby's progress into the Third Round and a home tie against Tadcaster Albion of the Northern Counties East League.
