The weather tried to spoil the afternoon for the NWCFL but only five games were called off due to water-logged pitches - a great effort by the volunteers throughout the region.

The NWCFL top-flight league leaders out on a 5-star performance with a comfortable 5-0 win over third-place Charnock Richard - Scott McGowan bagging a brace on the way to three points.

With second place Bootle off, Longridge Town took advantage gaining a 2-1 win away at Whitchurch Alport on an emotional day for the club who recently lost one of their volunteers and key fans Aaron Millington.

Ashton Athletic kept up the pressure towards the top of the table as they won 2-1 away at Avro, meanwhile, Runcorn Town came from behind to defeat Irlam 2-1 whilst Winsford United and Congleton Town thrashed out an entertaining 2-2 draw.

Squires Gate held off a competitive Skelmersdale United 3-1, but over at Rylands, it was a goal-fest for the 115 spectators as the home side swept aside Padiham 5-1.

In the First Division North, the top four in the league all won stretching their advantage in the promotion race. Lower Breck was behind on 11 minutes, but a quick turnaround followed by three late goals finished off Garstang 5-1. Emley AFC left it late to win 1-0 away at Chadderton, AFC Liverpool had a scare against Cleator Moor Celtic - eventually winning 4-2 and Shelley cruised to a 4-1 win over Pilkington.

Elsewhere, Golcar United turned the game of its head against AFC Blackpool - winning 2-1, Fraser Beckett netting two goals in the last five minutes of the game. Nelson recorded their first win of the year - a 2-0 win away at Atherton LR and Prestwich Heys kept their unbeaten start to 2020 with a hard-fought 2-1 win over AFC Darwen.

The top two in the First Division South won, making the gap to third now seven points. Vauxhall Motors had a tough game away at 3-2 but scrapped through 3-2 victors, whilst in the early kick-off, FC Oswestry Town grabbed a late winner - defeating Abbey Hey 2-1.

Abbey Hulton United's Kieran Lazenby grabbed his 11th of the season as they won 1-0 against Barnton, whilst Alsager Town won by the same scoreline against St Martins - Callum Collinson scoring in the 87th minute.

A third 1-0 scoreline of the day occurred at Eccleshall as they beat Maine Road 1-0, meanwhile, Wythenshawe Town came away from New Mills with all three points following a 4-2 win.

And lastly, West Didsbury & Chorlton bounced back from their defeated last week to end the weekend sixth in the standings after their slender 1-0 win over Stone Old Alleynians.

The action in the NWCFL returns on Monday with three exciting fixtures. Main Road takes on Ellesmere Rangers and Stockport Town face Abbey Hey in the NWCFL First Division South, whilst Winsford United welcome Hyde United in the Cheshire Senior Cup Second Round.
