REVIEW: FA Cup delight for majority of NWCFL clubs

Saturday saw the return of the Emirates FA Cup, alongside four other competitions for NWCFL sides - as over 50 clubs competed up and down the region.

Six sides from the NWCFL top flight were left in the Emirates FA Cup First Qualifying Round, and after 90 minutes of play, four sides were still left in.
 
Irlam dispatched fellow NWCFL side Charnock Richard 4-0 whilst Runcorn Town came from behind to defeat Newcastle Benfield 3-2.
 
Additionally, Northwich Victoria are still in the competition but required a replay after a goalless draw away at Lancaster City and Scott McGowan netted twice as 1874 Northwich beat Northern Premier League side Pickering Town two-nil.
 
A club record attendance of 797 at Whitchurch Alport saw a narrow two-nil defeat by Leek Town on a superb day for the club despite the result.
 
The draw for the next round is on Monday around 1 pm and will be on our website www.nwcfl.com shortly after.
 
The PlayerMatch.com Cup First Round also took place with eight games being played. Lower Breck were the biggest winners of the afternoon, with Michael Douglas and Mitchell Culshaw both bagging braces as they defeat Vauxhall Motors 6-2.
 
Abbey Hey scored late to defeat Bacup Borough 3-2, whilst a brace from Ashley Colclough helped Abbey Hulton United to a 4-1 win over Ellesmere Rangers.
 
Shelley travelled back down the M62 after being defeat 3-1 by AFC Liverpool, whilst a late Paul Sunderland goal secured a 2-1 win for Cheadle Town over Cleator Moor Celtic.
 
AFC Blackpool head into the next round following a 3-0 win away at Holker Old Boys. Meanwhile, New Mills and Eccleshall could not be separated after a 3-3 draw as the game went to penalties, with the latter winning 5-4. The same occurred at Steeton who lost on penalties after a goalless draw with FC Oswestry Town - winning 5-3 after penalty kicks.
 
There were five NWCFL Premier Division games, with all the games producing goals. Rylands extended their lead at the top of the league with a 2-0 away win at Winsford United. 
 
Longridge Town lost the chance to join them clear of the rest as they lost to Barnoldswick Town 3-1.
 
Bootle came from 2-0 down against Squires Gate to win 4-2 showing much character to end the weekend sixth in the standings.
 
Ashton Athletic’s Adam Gilchrist netted twice in their 2-1 win at home against Hanley, whilst Padiham and Litherland REMYCA had to settle for a 1-1 draw.
 
In the NWCFL First Division North, Ashton Town’s 5-0 win over Nelson moved them to the top of the table.
 
Wins for Daisy Hill over Golcar United (1-0) and Atherton LR versus St Helens Town (3-2) saw them climb into the automatic promotion slots -Connor Comber grabbing the headlines for Atherton with a superb hat-trick.
 
Chadderton came from behind to defeat Garstang 2-1 whilst a 92nd minute Luke Sephton goal secured a late win for Pilkington who won at home 3-2 against Emley AFC.
 
In the First Division South, Stone Old Alleynians cemented their spot in the top four with a 1-1 draw against Cammell Laird 1907.
 
The biggest winners of the day were Stockport Town, an 8-2 win against Maine Road - Kyle Foley netting three well-taken goals in the process.
 
Sandbach United secured a fine 4-1 away win at Cheadle Heath Nomads, whilst lastly, Wythenshawe Town moved about their local rivals (Wythenshawe Amateurs) with a 2-0 win against St Martins.
 
The NWCFL action returns on Tuesday evening when all three divisions are in action.
