Dave Warns Against Writing Off The Dominoes

Despite his team’s precarious position at the bottom of the Premier Division, new Stone Dominoes manager Dave Dale is warning that the Doms shouldn’t be written off as relegation certainties.
Since taking over the managerial reins a month ago from Dean Sibson, former Eccleshall manager Dave has been in the unusual position of not being able to attend first team games, as he underwent a knee operation the week after he was appointed.
However, he was already at the club in a coaching capacity, and as he explained, he has relied heavily on his number two Nick Marren and coach Joe Humphries to keep things ticking over.
“The timing of me taking over just before I went in for an operation was difficult, but Nick and Joe have done a fantastic job while I’ve been out of action”, said Dave. “When Dean left, we needed to act quickly with the team at the bottom of the league.
“We have suffered some heavy defeats, but we have some good players coming in, and once they start to gel a bit, hopefully we can get back to winning ways”.
A lack of experience in the squad is a concern to Dave, and while he accepts that time might be against him in building a side to escape relegation, he also believes that there are already signs that his side is showing the necessary fighting qualities to survive.
“The lads did well in coming back from 2-1 down to win 3-2 against Glossop, and that shows that they have started to realise what needs to be done to win games.
“Speaking to other managers in the league, they all agree that there is a grit and tenacity required to win games in the Premier Division, and you have to understand what is needed. It’s not just about playing pretty passing football, and the teams at the top of the table don’t just play good football, they know what it takes to win games”.
The good news for Dave is that he is now able to get out and about, and would have been back in the dugout for the game at St Helens at the weekend, had the weather not intervened. But the reserves game against Newcastle Town survived, and he was able to get back into watching the action first hand once again.
“It was good being able to get down to the game, have a chat to lads and start putting things in place for training, and for the up and coming games” Dave said. “We have a fight on our hands to stay in the division, and after the club getting promotion a couple of seasons ago, it would sad if the work that Shaun Hollinshead (the manager at the time) and the people off the field put in to get the club promoted was wasted.
“With some of the games we have to come, there are a number of games where I believe we can get points home and away. At home particularly, there are games we have to earmark as possible wins. Yes, some games are winnable and others are less so, but all we can ask is that the players show a good attitude and put in good effort in games.
“We need a few results going our way and a bit of luck, but I wouldn’t write us off yet”.
