Atherton Collieries won the 2012 Bolton Hospital Cup Trophy on Tuesday 8 May with a 4-1 penalty shoot-out win over West Lancashire League outfit Eagley.

The game, which was played at the Reebok Stadium, was drawn 2-2 after 90 minutes and as no extra time is played in the sixteen team competition, penalties settled the showpiece final.

Below is the match report by Colls Media Officer Vincent Bradley.

Colls made their first appearance at the Reebok Stadium in nine years and faced an Eagley side that had demolished Atherton Laburnum Rovers in the semi-finals.

Eagley looked the better side early on, but created little in front of goal. It took until the tenth minute for Colls to get a shot on target, via a tame effort from Gary Burnett. The Atherton side were ahead just two minutes later. A Simon Pendlebury through ball was latched onto by Gary Burnett, who rounded the goalkeeper to score the opening goal of the game.

Eagley still shaded possession, but Colls had started to settle a little more following the goal. Penalty appeals were turned down at both ends as the half wore on. Meanwhile, chances fell to Joe Evans, Simon pendlebury and Steve Rothwell before the half drew to a close. The latter was a superb long range effort that almost shaved the crossbar.

Colls were the better side in the early stages of the second half. They capitalised on this with just over five minutes gone as a superb through ball from Brad Cooke found Gary Burnett, who made no mistake and doubled the Atherton club's lead.

The men in black and white seemed to rest on their two-goal cushion and allowed Eagley to regain the initiative. Having hit the bar in the 67th minute, the Bolton club was awarded a penalty. The boot of Andy Walker was far too high for the referee's liking, so he had no option but to point to the spot on this occasion. Andrew Warburton stepped up to take the kick and finished well to reduce Colls' advantage.

In the dying minutes, Colls were firmly camped in their own half as Eagley through everything at them to get their equaliser. They got their reward in the 90th minute through Chris Benson and took the game into a penalty shoot-out.

The goal at the Reebok's usual away end was nominated and Colls were to take the first kick. Gary Burnett finished to give his side the initial advantage. Dave Sherlock put his penalty away to level the contest for Eagley. Joe Evans was next to take his kick for Colls and put it away without a problem. Mitchell Leece's penalty for Eagley was saved well by Lee Novak.

Andy Walker scored his penalty to give the men in black and white a clear lead. Ashley Young's penalty was saved superbly by Lee Novak to give Colls match point. Substitute Mike Mulrooney made no mistake and the Bolton Hospital Cup was back at Alder House for the first time since 1987- some 25 years ago.

The only downside to the night was that a challenge on Simon Howard resulted in a broken foot and he will be in plaster for six weeks.

Colls Team  - Lee Novak, Craig Ward, Steve Rothwell (Joe Fielding 90 Mins), Andy Walker, Simon Pendlebury, Ross McNair, Joe Evans (C), Simon Howard (Mike Mulrooney 63 mins), Gary Burnett (Man of the Match), Paul Townshend (Paul Hynes 73 mins) & Brad Cooke. Subs Not Used Danny Nolan & Steve Madden.

This is the second piece of silverware the club have picked up under manager's Steve Pilling's tenure and it follows on from success in the 2010/11 First Division Trophy.  The Bolton News previewed the game on Tuesday morning and Steve told them: "This has been my most frustrating season in football.  Even though we finished fourth in the league we have massively underachieved and a win would put a shine on what has been a disappointing season".

Colls Secretary Emil Anderson said:  "The win made up for last season's semi final penalty defeat to Old Boltonians.  We had to win the game twice, we led with two Gary Burnett goals but Eagley dug in and when they reduced the arrears with the penalty they were definitely on top.

"The equaliser was basically  the last kick of the game and it was perhaps a good job for us that there was no extra time.  The competition organiser said that the Reebok surface sapped energy and he was not wrong.  However we picked ourselves for the penalty shoot-out and four unerring penalties plus a couple of great Lee Novak saves gave us the cup.

"You have to feel sorry for Eagley who fought back from the dead and they took their defeat with dignity.  They are good side who play in a very good league and perhaps it is time some of the West Lancashire League teams chance their hand further up the pyramid.

"We are proud to win the Bolton Hospital Cup for the first time in 25 years and for a 3rd time in total.  Our initial win was in 1974.  Winning on penalties certainly did not take the edge off it, nobody ever mentions that Man Utd only beat Chelsea in the Champions League on penalties, it is winning the trophy that counts.

"Thanks to Steve and his assistants Gareth Hall and Lee Blackshaw for the effort they have put in over the season. Thanks  alsoto Peter Conroy and his committee for organising the competition and the chance to play  at the Reebok was great.  We will start planning for next season now and hopefully a push for promotion".
