Town Host Tranmere Rovers in the Liverpool Senior Cup
Mon 31st January 2011 | St Helens Town | By Ian Templeman
This Wednesday, 2nd February sees St Helens Town in Liverpool Senior Cup Quarter-Final action against Tranmere Rovers, in a tie being played at Ashton Town's Edge Green Street ground.
It's only the second meeting between the clubs in the competition since it was opened up to non-league teams in the 1977/78 season.
That previous meeting with the Rovers took place on the 9th March 1995 at Hoghton Road, Town losing 1-3 in a Second Round tie. The Town team was Weaver, King, Lowe, McClatchey, Reilly, O'Neill, Bickerstaffe, Knowles, Cooper, Pennington and Williams. Substitutes were Shaw, Hughes and Ogburn and Knowles scored the goal after 32 minutes.
The attendance was 332, a gate that would be very welcome for Town this Wednesday evening. Rovers went on to win the Cup that season, their most recent success in the competition. Whilst Town have yet to reach the Final of the competition, Rovers have won the Cup on 8 occasions, with their last appearance in the Final being in 2007, when they lost to Everton at Prenton Park.
St. Helens Town have reached the Semi-Final twice before, losing to Kirkby Town by the only goal in April 1987. A year later, they lost 1-3 at Southport at the same stage.
Of all the teams currently competing in the competition, Town have yet to face only Everton and their current 'landlords' Ashton Town. Town have yet to beat Bootle, Liverpool, Marine, Southport and, of course, Tranmere. Town's record victory in the Senior Cup is a 7-1 win over Formby back in November 1986, whilst their heaviest defeat is a 1-5 loss at Prescot Cables in November 1999.
Town Chairman John McKiernan said, "We're really looking forward to the game, it's always a great occasion to host a league outfit and it's an opportunity for the players and management team to pit themselves against a professional club.
"We are expecting a tough encounter but the players have nothing to lose and with the possibility of a semi-final tie against Premier League Everton or Liverpool there should be sufficient incentive."
He added: "The local press have given us some great coverage in the past week and this will hopefully encourage a good attendance at a time when gates are generally down for us.
"Our temporary move to Ashton Town, while we await the development of the new St Helens stadium, has seen the expected downturn in spectators through the turnstiles, and hopefully Wednesday's game will remind them where we are and the brand of football available on their doorstep."
With no other Vodkat League games scheduled for Wednesday, Ashton Town's Edge Green Street ground is the place to be for all followers of our league. The same competition last season produced cracking games for Bootle and Ashton Town against Everton and Liverpool, and once again there's a chance to watch one of our clubs in competitive action against a professional team.
Admission for the game will be priced at Adults £5, Concessions £3 and match programmes will cost £1.20.
