Ahead of the Football Association's announcement of the 2026/27 season Club Allocations which we expect will be sometime this week, Premier Division side Stockport Town have released the following statement:
"After careful consideration of Stockport Town FC’s long-term future and its ability to compete at Step 5 of the National League System, the Board has taken the difficult decision to resign from the North West Counties Football League for the 2026/27 season.
"The Board would like to thank all staff, players, volunteers, supporters, and everyone who has represented the club since its inception in 2014 for their contribution, dedication, and support over the years.
"Further details regarding future plans will be announced in due course."
Everybody at the NWCFL wishes the club the best of luck moving forward.
Stockport Town In The NWCFL
Stockport joined the NWCFL at the start of the 2015/16 season in the First Division, finishing fourth in their first season but missing out in the PlayOffs Semi Finals. In their third season, they reached the Cheshire Senior Cup Final, losing 3-0 to Nantwich Town.
The league split after their third season with Stockport put in the First Division South, with the club finishing in 10th or 11th place for a number of years. This was until the 2022/23 season when they finished second behind Wythenshawe after dropping points in two of their last four games. They again lost in the PlayOff Semi Finals to Cheadle Town.
The following season they again finished second, this time reaching the PlayOff Final, but their jinx continued as they lost to Abbey Hey on penalties. Despite this, with vacancies at Step 5 due to teams dropping out across the country, Stockport were then promoted to the Premier Division as one of the losing Play Off finalists with the best Points Per Game record.
Last season was their first in the Premier Division which saw them finish in tenth place. This season they continued to establish themselves firmly as a Premier Division team with a 12th place finish.
In total they played 395 games in the NWCFL, winning 189, drawing 72 and losing 134. They scored 799 goals in total and conceded 602.
