A first half goal from Stockton Town's Fred Woodhouse ended City of Liverpool's hopes of extending their first ever FA Vase adventure.

For the second round in succession, the Bishopton Road ground on Tees-side proved to be the end of the road for a Merseyside club, with the Northern League side having seen off Bootle in the last round.

But it was a sore defeat for the Purples after they dominated the second half and had a Tom Peterson goal disallowed.

Stockton enjoyed the better of the first half, and the decisive goal arrived in the 20th minute, when a a low drive from Fred Woodhouse beat Purps keeper Graeme McCall and nestled into the bottom corner of the net.

But the Purps began to enjoy more possession as the half wore on, and took control after the break.

Elliott Nevitt, Danny Dalton and Michael Roberts all had chances in the opening ten minutes of the second half, but the sorest point of the afternoon arrived on 67 minutes, when Tom Peterson curled a delightful shot into the net, only to have the celebrations ended abruptly when the referee pulled play back for a foul on a Town player.

Roared on a by a good sized travelling support, the Purps laid siege to the home goal, but the Northern League side held out to claim the win.

City of Liverpool Media Officer Gary Johansen said: "It was a game of two halves really. They had the majority of the first half, even though we had some chances, but in the second half we absolutely dominated.

"We absolutely bombarded them, and I think we definitely deserved a draw.

"The attendance was 527 which Stockton were delighted with and I'd say we had at least 200 of our fans here.

"Obviously there's disappointment, especially when you dominate the second half like we did and had numerous chances.

"But they defended well and we just couldn't break them down".
