There’s now just over a week to go before the first competitive game of the 2017-18 season, when Atherton Collieries meet City of Liverpool in this year’s Reusch Champions Cup on Saturday 29th July.

The game, which sees the Hallmark Security League Premier Division winners host the Macron Challenge Cup winners, was reinstated last year after a number of years’ absence.

In the past, it had been a regular competition that marked the end of the league season, but fixture congestion led to the game being scrapped.

The trophy used also went missing for a number of years, before being unearthed in 2015, and this prompted the League’s Management Committee to reinstate the competition as a season opener.

In July last year, 2015-16 Premier Division winners Colne hosted cup winners Atherton Collieries in a rerun of the game that brought the curtain on the 2015-16 season, when the two met in the Challenge Cup final at Fleetwood Town’ Highbury Stadium.

In a close game, Colne won 2-0 with two late goals from Dominic Craig and Matthew Beadle, so Colls now have a second opportunity to lift the trophy before they embark on their Evo-Stik League adventure.

This season’s tie promises to be a fascinating encounter, between two sides who will be looking to pick up from where they left off at the end of their very successful seasons last time out.

Entrance to the game at the Kensite Stadium is by cash payment at the turnstiles on the day, with Adult admission £5, Concessions & Students £3, and free admission to accompanied Under 12s.
