Goals in each half booked Bootle’s place in the Third Round of the Vase with a 2-0 win over fellow Premier Division side Padiham.

In a keenly contested and fast paced encounter at the YESSS Electrical Arena, a close range header from Steve Jones gave the Bucks a half time lead, and despite a spirited second half performance from the home side, an opportunist goal from Carl Peers seven minutes from time sealed victory for the visitors.

Back in September, Bootle emerged with a 3-0 win from a league encounter between the two sides at the same venue, and they picked up from where they left off in an opening 45 minutes which saw them dominate for long spells.

The warning signs were there for Padiham from as early as the 10th minute, when Bootle’s Kieran Halligan rattled the inside of the post with a rasping 25 yard shot, and the same player came close again moments later when he popped on the left hand side to curl another effort just over the bar.

Padiham did cause alarm in the opposition ranks on 18 minutes, when striker James Dean picked up a ball down the left, cut inside and fired in a shot that Bootle keeper Ryan Jones blocked with his legs, but it was the visitors who broke the deadlock at the midway point of the first half.

Once again the lively Halligan was involved, firing in a shot that beat the keeper, hit the underside of the bar, and bounced down into the path of Steve Jones, who had the simple task of heading the ball into the unguarded net.

It was no more than Bootle deserved on the run of the play, and they continued to dominate as the half wore on, with Ryan Cox shooting wide, a header from Halligan being well saved by Padiham keeper Michael Donlon, and slackness in the Padiham defence allowing Carl Peers in for a well struck shot that narrowly missed the target.

However, despite Bootle’s domination there was just one goal between the teams at the break, and Padiham emerged in determined mood after half time and began to enjoy their own spell of pressure and possession.

The towering presence of James Dean leading the line for Padiham was a constant threat for the Bootle defence with his pace and link up play, although the first clear chance of the second half arrived on the counter attack for Bootle, when Ryan Cox picked up a fine through ball, rounded the keeper but lost control of the ball at the vital moment with the goal at his mercy.

However, Padiham began to exert pressure as they went in search of an equaliser, and a shot from Aaron Taylor, a header across the face of goal by Mark Coyne and a well struck effort from Chris Turner pushed out by Bootle keeper Ryan Jones were all chances that could have had a decisive outcome on the game.

But it was Bootle who sealed the win seven minutes from time, when Padiham keeper Donlon took a heavy touch on a back pass as he looked to clear upfield, and Carl Peers won the chase for the loose ball to fire into the unguarded net and seal Bootle’s place in the next round.

Bootle manager Joe Doran said: “In the first half they only really had one chance and I think we dominated. We kept the ball, kept them in areas that we wanted to play in, and overall I’m absolutely made up with the result.

“In the second half they did have quite a bit more possession than us, but we held firm, kept a clean sheet and then got a bit of luck to get the second goal. But I felt in the second half we were always just a couple of passes away from getting a breakaway.

“Ryan Cox had a great chance to make it 2-0 just after half time, and I think if we had got that, the game might have opened up a bit more.

“But it was a good game, and we are made up to be in the next round.

“When you look at the start of the season and set your targets, getting as far as you can in the Vase is a priority. The lads love the FA Vase, talking about the next round and possibly getting a long away trip.

“It’s something we all look forward to and while the league is our main aim, the Vase is a nice distraction to have”.
