A second half brace from Jordan Cover and a Ben Hardcastle strike saw Atherton Collieries comfortably through to the third round of the Buildbase FA Vase, defeating 1874 Northwich 3-0.

The all Hallmark Security League Premier Division encounter at St Lukes Barton Stadium pitted two of the division’s top five against each other, and in an even first half there was nothing between the two teams.

Play switched from end to end, but despite both sides drawing saves from the opponent’s keeper, neither side looked like scoring until seven minutes into the second half.

Cover ran onto a through ball played over the 1874 defence, hitting a powerful shot past 1874 goalkeeper Greg Hall, who despite getting a hand to the ball, was unable to stop its progress into the net.

Seven minutes later Cover turned provider laying the ball off to Hardcastle after some clever play in the 1874 area, allowing Hardcastle to shoot on the turn from ten yards.

The away side were now in control of the game, and were content to sit back and take advantage of the space left at the back as 1874 pushed forward in search of a route back into the game.

Creating several chances on the break in the closing quarter of the game, Colls were only able to convert one in the 75th minute. Mark Tuffas fired in a shot which Hall did well to save, but could not hold onto the ball which rebounded into the path of Cover who calmly slotted the ball home.
