The cold weather relented enough for this 4th Round FA Vase tie to go ahead at the 3rd attempt and it did not disappoint.

When the draw was made this looked like the tie of the round, and no-one would have left feeling short-changed – in particular the North End supporters, who celebrated Jason Carey’s extra-time winner late into the night.

After a surreal start to the game – a ‘refreshed’ sounding voice on the Tannoy loudly singing ‘Delilah’ as, and after, the referee blew his whistle - Worksop started at 100mph, forcing a first minute corner from which Higginson’s shot from the edge of the area was blocked, and Dave Young came sliding in to snuff out Conor Sellars’ effort.

Mitch Husbands saw a header from a dangerous cross drift wide on the quarter-hour, after which the game settled down.

It was very tight in midfield, with possession changing hands frequently and both defences bossing their 18 yard box, meaning that neither side were able to create a chance of note for the remainder of the opening period.

In contrast to the first half, both teams came out firing after the break.

Greg Hall made a comfortable save from Sellars’ shot and the same players cross going right across the face of goal, whilst at the other end Tom Bailey got in on the angle twice. The first time Stewart saved his fierce volley with a strong hand, the second time just getting his fingertips to the striker’s attempted lob.

The sides almost took it in turns to have spells on top without creating clear cut chances. For 20 minutes North End held sway in midfield, then Worksop took over for a while, Sellars dramatic fall at the edge of the area signalling the sea change after a bout of handbags.

As the game edged towards full time, North End again became the aggressors, and you sensed that perhaps they looked the fitter side for extra time.

Dave Young curled a free kick wide, Bailey headed Carey’s cross over the bar and Bailey and Sam Hind both had shots blocked in a goalmouth scramble after Bailey had fumbled. That was the last opening, and extra time was needed.

As with the rest of the game, extra time was cagey, but the break through finally came on 102 minutes.

A free kick on the left touchline was swung in from the left hand side onto the edge of the 6 yard box. Jason Carey rose highest and almost back-headed the ball into the corner of the net, sending the North End players and fans into raptures.

Worksop huffed and puffed to get back into the game after this body blow, but found a back-line determined to hold onto their clean sheet.

Indeed, it was North End that were closest to scoring again, particularly when the tireless Eddie Moran snatched the ball off Worksop at the second period kick-off and drove to the edge of the area, but the midfielder just shot over the bar.

Worksop did force a goalmouth scramble, after Hall dropped a long ball, but North End put their bodies on the line where it counted, whilst at the other end Hind nearly forced an own goal with a cross after a break-away sprint down the left.

Carey also got through, only to be foiled by the toe of the keeper, way out of his box to meet him.

Glossop kept the ball well as time ticked away, and the final chance fell to them, Sam Hind’s chipped shot just going over the bar. The whistle blew and the North End players celebrated with their fans.

Last week’s postponement meant that they already knew who their opponents will be, and they will take on Dunston UTS in the next round, at Surrey Street on the 7th February.
