There will be a few new faces in the First Division South in 2024/25, and recently-promoted Telford Town are looking to cause a stir in their new-found surroundings.

The 'Ams', as they are known, have a rich history dating back to when they were first formed as Old Wellingtonians in 1950 by former students of Wellington Grammar School. Before too long they were re-named to Wellington Amateurs, a name that stood the test of time until the Telford Town moniker was adopted a little over 12 months ago.

While the club are newcomers to the NWCFL, they are no strangers to the National League System. Playing under their previous name, they competed at Step 6 in the West Midlands (Regional) League Premier Division for six seasons in the 2010s. The club's highest-ever league finish was in the first of those seasons, finishing 12th in the 2012/13 campaign. A 13th-place finish followed in the following season before four years towards the foot of the table culminating in relegation at the end of the 2017/18 season.

A season of consolidation followed in the WMRL Division One as the Ams finished 7th before two abandoned seasons as the pandemic stalled non-League football. 4th- and 8th-place finishes followed before a huge change in the club's trajectory as Hayden Dando completed a takeover of the club in January 2024 before changing the name of the club to Telford Town in March of that year. The club finished 3rd in the division that season but didn't achieve promotion; they did however lift the Powell Cup to secure their first piece of silverware under this new moniker.

The 2024/25 season, the first full campaign as Telford Town, proved to be a momentous one for all involved at the club as a historic treble was won; 23 wins in 28 games (scoring 94 goals) saw the Ams win the West Midlands (Regional) League by eight points. The Powell Cup was also retained after a penalty shoot-out victory over fellow promotees Haughmond and the Shropshire Challenge Cup was the jewel in the crown. It was also a first season for the junior and women's sides as the club expanded to become a real community asset.

Following promotion to Step 6, the club has announced a further expansion of the junior and women's sections this summer alongside a new Disability Football section.

Manager Matthew Boswell gave us his thoughts following release of the allocations as Town's promotion was rubber-stamped: "We're absolutely delighted to be assigned to the North West Counties, a league well-renowned for its exceptional organisation as well as the tough footballing challenge that it offers.

We come into the league with ambition to compete as strongly as possible, whilst recognising the huge challenge we will face due to the many top teams within the division. We will prepare our squad for success and will represent our club as strongly as possible. We have no intention of just making up the numbers."

Director of Football Mickey Baker said the following: "In terms of promotion, when the chairman Ade Dando (former Hednesford chairman) came to the club in January 2024 he was very clear promotion was the target this season.

"First team manager Matthew Boswell and I were very selective with recruitment in pre season, we targeted specific players and were very fortunate to get them. The club hasn't been at Step 6 since it was known as Wellington Amateurs in 2017.

"This is a new era under new leadership, Ade's ambition was Step 5 within 5 years. We have gone from two teams to over 30 next season with a full youth section, ladies team who have just won promotion to Step 6 too and an academy launching in August. So promotion for the men's senior team was critical to raise exposure of the club, it unlocks greater commercial opportunities and attracts higher calibre players. We are excited for the journey into the NWCFL, we have heard lots of good things so can’t wait to get going!"

The club play their home games at the DRM Aggregate Arena in the Oakengates area of Telford (postcode TF2 6BQ), just a couple of miles off Junction 5 of the M54. They will open their league campaign with an away game at Foley Meir on Saturday 26th July, following that up with a first NWCFL game under the lights at home against Haughmond on Wednesday 30th July.
