Charnock Richard have confirmed over the weekend that Club Legend Carl Grimshaw is leaving the club after 12 years.  The club legend has been with the club through its progression to an NWCFL Club challenging for the Premier Division Title and has a goal-scoring record that is incredible in the modern game.  A detailed statement released by Charnock Richard on their club website reads:

Sadly, Charnock Richard FC can confirm that club legend, captain and record goal scorer Carl Grimshaw has decided to leave the club after a continuous 12 year playing career at the club.

Carl made his debut for the club in the Goldline Trophy on the 21st July 2009 and has since gone on to make 432 appearances for the club playing in the West Lancashire League and more recently the North West Counties Football League.

Throughout his career at the club, Carl demonstrated  that he was destined to become a prolific goal scorer, slotting home an incredible 474 competitive goals for the club. In the clubs first season in the NWCFL Division One in 2016-17, Carl won the golden boot award after scoring 45 goals and following promotion to the Premier Division that season, Carl repeated the same feat for the next two seasons, scoring an incredible 51 and 42 goals.

Such long term loyalty and commitment from a player is virtually unknown at this level, despite Carl receiving many lucrative offers to play for clubs at a higher level. Over his many seasons at the club, Carl’s contribution both on and off the field  has been instrumental in our progress up the National League System and it is hard to believe that we could have achieved so much without his outstanding loyalty to Charnock Richard FC.

As Carl rapidly approached his target of 500 competitive goals for the club, the loss of football due to Covid-19 severely dented his ambition to reach this remarkable milestone. Without the pandemic then we are sure that Carl would have already completed this target which would have enabled him to complete a fairy-tale ending to his career at the club.

We are sure that many of the club members and supporters will be deeply disappointed to hear this sad news that Carl will be leaving the club after such an amazing 12 years. Carl always has been a huge favourite for many people at the club and it will be not be easy for us all to get used to his name no longer being on the team sheet. Clearly, Carl’s playing days are not yet over and he has expressed a wish to continue playing and scoring goals as he moves into another chapter in his illustrious career.

Everyone at Charnock Richard FC would like to thank Carl for his amazing loyalty and commitment to our club over the past 12 seasons . Carl will always be part of the Charnock family and we hope that he will stay closely connected to the club. We sincerely wish him all the very best for his future career wherever that takes him. Thanks for everything Grimmy.
