We're back! And we're speaking again to multiple victorious managers from this weekend's.fixtures in the MWCFL's premier cup competition, the Macron Cup.
Premier Division side Euxton Villa enjoyed themselves on Saturday with a trip to the seaside to face First Division North outfit Squires Gate. Matty Atherton's side ran out 4-2 winners on the coast, with the gaffer saying afterwards: "We're really pleased to progress in the Macron Cup and to get a much needed win after six weeks without one.
"And we were good value for it too, with four goals scored and arguably the man of the match still being the opposition keeper. It was great to see an energy and intensity to our game that has been lacking for a few weeks. Credit to Squires Gate - they scored an excellent equaliser and took it to the wire, but ultimately I think it was the right result on the day.
"We can now look forward to extending our cup run further. Hopefully we can build some momentum on the back of this and start climbing that league table, starting with an important fixture against Abbey Hey next weekend."
Waiting for Villa in the Second Round of this year's Macron Cup will be First Division North side Fulwood Amateurs, who were drawn at home to divisional rivals Colne in the First Round.
Phil Blackwell's side put on a show, putting five past their visitors without reply, and the man in charge had this to say after full time: "We knew the great run of form Colne had been on, so it was really pleasing to be able to come out on top against a very good side.
"It was a fairly even game with regards to possession, but we took our chances at good times and managed to restrict their clear cut opportunities. It's also really pleasing to keep a clean sheet. In the next round, we've got a great draw against Euxton Villa, which will hopefully capture some local interest when it comes around."
One of this weekend's biggest winners were First Division South new arrivals Crewe, who were drawn at home against another side who are making the NWCFL debuts this season in the South, Brereton Social. Joe Pointon and Adam Vickers orchestrated a 6-0 win on home soil for Crewe on Saturday, after which Joe said: "We’ve been threatening to put a performance like that together for a while, so it was really pleasing to see it come together.
"We were only 1-0 up at half-time, but I thought the intensity we played with had earned us the right to go on and really dominate the second half. We kept moving the ball quickly and with purpose, and created a lot of opportunities.
"After the disappointment of last week, it was a brilliant reaction from the players. The challenge now is for us to learn our lessons from the past two weeks and make sure our standards are where they need to be consistently."
