A successful Groundhop weekend
Although the weather did its best to wreck the proceedings, there's no doubt that the weekend Grounhop was a resounding success.
From the opening Friday night game at Barnton, through Saturday at Bootle. Litherland REMYCA, Lower Breck and St Helens, and finishing up on Sunday at Rylands, each club enjoyed their biggest home attendance of the season, and organisers pronounced the weekend a big success.
Let's hope that many of those who experienced action in our league for the first time will be persuaded to return.
Lucky 13 for Bootle
The opening game of the Saturday series of games in the Groundhop was at Bootle, where the Bucks recorded a 4-2 win over Ashton Athletic to stay on the tails of league leaders City of Liverpool.
It was also the latest victory in a remarkable run of form for Joe Doran's men, with Saturday's win being their 13th in succession.
They may still be five points behind the Purps at the top of the table, but the leaders will no doubt be looking over their shoulders at the threat posed by their landlords.
Snappy hat trick from Alex
There was an impressive display of sharp shooting from Whitchurch Alport's Alex Hughes on Saturday, when he scored a hat trick in the space of five minutes to put his side on the road to victory at Barnoldswick Town.
There are unfortunately no league records that can confirm what the quickest ever hat trick is, but it's fair to assume Alex's effort would take some beating.
Seven up yet again for Avro
We have written on these pages in the past about the value for money Avro give to their home supporters, and they were at it again on Saturday.
The 7-0 win over Atherton LR was the fifth time this season that they have hit opponents for seven at the Vestacare Stadium - and they have also scored six on two other occasions as well.
With six home games left to play, their loyal supporters will be hoping for more of the same in the coming weeks.
Bad luck Lairds
It’s not been the easiest of seasons for Cammell Laird 1097, but they certainly represented the league in fine style in the semi-final of the Cheshire Senior Cup on Tuesday night.
Against a Runcorn Linnets side on their own turf. who are riding high in the Evo-Stik League Division One West, Lairds put up a spirited display and were on level terms going into the last 20 minutes of the game, only to lose 2-1.
It was a fine performance in a tough tie, and delivered plenty of positives despite the defeat.
