Cup coup from Barlick

A shout out must go out to Barnoldswick Town, for an impressive 8-1 win at Knaresborough Town in the West Riding County Cup last midweek.

A win by that margin in any competition is impressive, but it’s all the more so when the opponents are sitting in third place in the Northern Counties East League Premier Division.

In saying that, maybe it’s not so surprising when you look back at Barlick’s previous two results as they reveal a team bang in goalscoring form, as they went to Knaresborough on the back of a 9-4 win over Eccleshall and a 7-1 win at Abbey Hey.

The shooting boots are well and truly on fire in the Barlick ranks at the moment.

Late late show at Cleator Moor

When it comes to dramatic finales in games, it’s doubtful that we will see one for the rest of the season that tops the events at Cleator Moor Celtic’s JBV Park on Saturday.

As the game against Shelley moved into the 86th minute, Celtic led 3-1, and then Matthew Waller, Craig Billington and Gary Driscoll all scored in the space of three minute to give Shelley a 4-3 lead.

The drama wasn’t over though, as Callum Birdsall struck an equaliser for Celtic in the third minute of stoppage time to level the game at 4-4.

You can only hope that no one left with a few minutes to go, thinking the game was done and dusted.

Ammies on form

As the end of the year approaches, everyone at Wythenshawe Amateurs will be more than happy with the way in which 2018 has panned out.

Continued developments at Hollyhedge Park, achieving membership of our league in the summer and a decent start to the season all give cause for optimism in 2019, especially as the Ammies go into Christmas at the top of the First Division South table after the 4-0 win at Stone Dominoes on Saturday.

It’s now 15 goals in the last three games for Shane Goldrick’s men, and the Boxing Day derby against neighbours Wythenshawe Town looks set to be a post-Christmas cracker.

Gate going great

Squires Gate continued their impressive winning run on Saturday, with their 2-0 success at Irlam being their fifth successive win.

It’s a run that is all more the impressive given that four of the five games have been away from home, and Andy Clarkson’s men have racked up 18 goals in the process.

With six of their next seven games at home, the challenge now is to keep the form going on home soil.

Vics looking good

Another of the form teams in the Premier Division are Northwich Victoria, who have now won eight of their last ten games, the latest a 2-0 win at home to Charnock Richard on Saturday.

They face a tough run of fixtures in the coming weeks, including visits to Newcastle Benfield in the FA Vase and league leaders City of Liverpool, but Steve Wilkes’ men will be going into the games with no lack of confidence given their current form.
