Purps meet the challenge

Saturday delivered one of the biggest games of the season so far, with Premier Division league leaders City of Liverpool hosting second placed Congleton Town at the TDP Solicitors Stadium.

With Congleton coming into the game on the back of four straight wins, that had narrowed the gap between the two clubs to just three points, there was no doubt that it was a clash of the Premier Division titans, but the Purps laid down an important marker in the title race with a 2-1 win.

There's plenty of football still be played yet, of course, and a lead of six points exactly halfway through the season would never lead to complacency from any team, but it was a result that will have given the Purps a big boost as the busy Christmas schedule approaches.

Top ten for Celtic

A big shout must go out to Cleator Moor Celtic, who struck ten goals without reply against Unisun Athletic in the Cumberland Senior Cup on Tuesday night.

Not only was the win their biggest of the season, it also set up a fascinating home tie in the quarter final of the competition against Carlisle United in the quarter final of the competition - a tie for everyone at JBV Park to savour in the New Year.

New manager a winner for West

It's often the case in football that a team gets a lift from a new manager taking over, and everyone at West Didsbury & Chorlton will be pleased at the winning start they have made under new manager David Powell.

The new boss's first game in charge saw West win 2-0 at Whitchurch Alport on Saturday, only their second away win in the league all season, and that against a team that had won 6-1 at Hanley Town in their previous game.

The challenge now is to see if that momentum can be carried into West's next home game, against Hanley on Tuesday, as they go in search of their first set of back to back wins this season.

Fine run from the Old Boys

One of the form sides in Division One South are Stone Old Alleynians, who celebrated their fifth win in succession on Tuesday night in fine style, by winning 6-0 against the league leaders on the night Abbey Hulton United.

Although the winning run came to an end at St Martins on Saturday, the recent fine form of the Old Boys has propelled them right up the table and into the congested promotion mix in the First Division South - making the promotion chase even more fascinating than it was already.

Admirals steady the ship

December has been a good month for Nelson, and their two results last week built on a run that has seen them win four of the last six games.

After a good win over Prestwich Heys in the Macron Cup, Andy Harrison's men followed that up with a fine second half display against Cleator Moor Celtic on Saturday, coming from two goals down at half time to win 4-2.

A few weeks ago, the Admirals were right down in the First Division North relegation zone, but with a mid-table position now beckoning just a couple of points away, there's now a more relaxed air around Little Wembley.
