Alnwick Town, Charnock Richard’s opponents in the FA Vase 1st Qualifying Round on the 1st September, have sent a letter to the FA Competitions Co-ordinator, Gary Mellish, withdrawing from the competition.

The decision was made due to a major plumbing problem at their St James Park ground.

Charnock secretary, Dave Rowland, also received a letter from Town’s secretary Cyril Cox outlining the club’s position, which read as follows.

“We are sad to say that we will have to withdraw from the above competition due to an unforeseen major failure of the heating and hot water system throughout the whole clubhouse, which includes the showers and kitchen.

"A problem came up and a heating engineer inspected the system. He had to immediately condemn the entire system. It is going to cost an estimated £12,000 to restore, which we will have to somehow raise straight away otherwise the Club will have to delay their early fixtures.

"We have tried our hardest to resolve it and it may come to members giving donations on top of gifts etc from local companies.

"There is a possibility of switching the 1st September game to Charnock but due to potential costs of that game, possible replay and going on to Penrith we have to be realistic and not embarrass ourselves and the FA Vase competition.

"We realise this could affect future applications, but we have no choice. Our players do not get paid nor anyone else as we put everything into improving the Club and juniors.

"We now have nearly 200 girls and boys in our junior divisions as well as another senior male team, a female team and a development team for U18s which will feed into our second team and senior side, so it is with a sad goodbye that we must be realistic to what we can afford.

"Grants would take too long, and it must be done now. We wish Charnock Richard a successful competition and the FA Vase another successful year”.

Although most clubs would be happy with a free pass into the next round of the Vase, Charnock Secretary Dave Rowland says everyone at Mossie Park is disappointed that the Northumberland side have been forced to withdraw from the FA Vase under such circumstances.

"We would not have chosen to have progressed in the competition in this manner, and we fully understand ‘Town’s’ position", said Dave.

"Charnock Richard is a community run club which provides football in a village that has a population of around just 1,700 plus.  We know and understand about sustainability at this level of the game and as such our sympathies are with them.

"Alnwick Town were relegated to their local Step 7 League, the Northern Alliance, after finishing in bottom spot in the Northern League last term. The club are going through a torrid time at present but it is hoped that they will bounce back in the near future.

"We wish Alnwick Town all the best for the future, and our hope is that they are able to find the means and the necessary funding to overcome their present situation".
