Congleton Town Chairman steps down

Congleton Town Chairman Steve Burgess has announced he is stepping down from the role after the upcoming League AGM in Blackpool.
Steve has been involved with the club for over 30 years, and at the Bears final game of the season against Winsford United on Monday, he was given a guard of honour from Winsford United FC players and management in recognition of his service to football and Congleton Town prior to kick off.
The gesture was much appreciated by the Bears management and supporters, given that it was Steve’s final match as Chairman of the Football Club.
Afterwards, Steve reflected on his time with the club.
“After virtually 30 years working with Congleton Town FC and reaching retiring age, I feel it’s time to hang up my boots.
“I’m proud of what I and everyone involved has achieved in developing and improving the facilities at my home town football club, and the retirement doesn’t mean I won’t carry on with my support for Congleton Town. I have so many happy memories it would be too hard to walk away.
“The first was when I went to watch my first match in 1956 on my father’s shoulders. Our first stop was the Royal Oak pub, and I was left in the publican’s living room with a bottle of pop and a bag of crisps with the rest of the children, until the landlord rang the bell letting the dad’s know it was time to collect the kids and head for the game.
“We won, and on the way home we passed Deans toy shop. If Town had won we were straight in, and Dad would buy me an Airfix model plane, but if we lost or drew he walked me straight past the shop,no toy for me ! Ass you can imagine my joy was greater than most for a win.
“Years on, whilst I was watching the reserve team, the club’s committee were busy cutting the grass behind the goals getting the ground ready for a friendly with Everton, but unfortunately for them the mower blow up.
“As I worked for the probation service at that time, I volunteered myself and the lads on community service to prepare the ground for the important game, and so on the Sunday I took twelve lads with strimmers and finished the job for them.
“It wasn’t long before we were concreting paths, building new changing rooms, and the then Chairman Paul Marshall said he was fed up with ordering build materials for the lads to use, and that I may as well become a director of the club so I could order the materials myself.
“That was the start of my years of service to the club that I love.
“There have been many changes over the years, the biggest when myself and the other shareholders surrendered all their shares to the club, to allow it to become a community owned club.
“I wish the greatest success to all those who follow in my footsteps. Come on the Bears”.
