As West Didsbury & Chorlton's squad prepare for their match at home to Congleton Town on Saturday, midfielder Jack Sergeant will be absent from the build up - but for a good reason.

Gibraltar-born Jack will be missing as he is away on international duty, having been called up to the Gibraltar full international squad for their game against Latvia this coming Sunday at the Victoria Stadium.

Jack has already appeared 11 times for the Gibraltar national team, lining up against Germany and the Republic of Ireland among others in European Championship qualifiers, when playing in the Gibraltar Premier Division for Manchester 62.

He left to come to Manchester in the summer of 2016 to study at university, and joined West in October last year. His appearance at Padiham on Saturday was his 14th of the season for the club.

Jack is the first player to be a member of a full international squad while playing in our league since Adnan Ahmed of Nelson made the Pakistan squad in 2013.

Speaking on the West club website, West manager Steve Settle said, “We are absolutely delighted for Jack following the international call up.

"He’s worked extremely hard over the past 5 months, during which time he’s been consistently one of our best players and the recognition is just rewards for his efforts.

"We hope he enjoys the experience and shows what he is capable of.”
