Last four for 1874

Once again the players, management, officials and supporters of 1874 Northwich enjoyed another day to remember as they defeated Leighton Town 1-0 in the quarter final of the Buildbase FA Vase.

The town of Leighton Buzzard's main claims to fame appear to be celebrity based, with hitmakers from the 1960s the Barron Knights and Kajagoogoo from the 1980s having been formed in the town, whic h has also been the home of a mixed bag of sportsmen including Kriss Akabusi, Frank Bruno, Darren Gough and Alistair Cook.

However, for everyone who made the trip down from Northwich to witness the Greens' victory, Leighton Buzzard will be remembered as the latest venue on the road heading to Wembley, which is now just one semi-final tie away.

It will take a good side to stop them lifting the trophy in May.

Yellow hat trick heroes

Matthew Reid's hat trick for Ashton Athletic away at Bootle in midweek was noteworthy for the fact that he ended up on the losing side, with Bootle emerging with a 4-3 victory thanks to a last minute winner.

However, Matthew is not short on company when it comes to comparing notes of hat tricks, as he is now the sixth Athletic player to achieve the feat this season, along with Dale Korie-Butler, Joel Brownhill and Daniel Smith who have all bagged two hat tricks, as well as Joshua Nicolson and Adam Howard with one apiece.

Little wonder that the Yellows have one of the best attacking goals per game in the league.

Business as usual once again for Craig

One name that has been notably missing from the goalscorers list in recent weeks has been Craig Cairns of Runcorn Town, who up to Saturday had not hit the back of the net in his last three games.

However, it was back to business as usual for Town's leading scorer who racked up his third hat trick of the season in the 5-0 win over Barnton.

A return to goalscoring form for one of the league's most prolific marksmen is the sort of news that opposing Premier Division defences will not want to hear.

Respect for Eddie

There was a nice touch shown by the players at Atherton LR on Friday evening at Daisy Hill, who sported black armbands in memory of one of their most famous supporters Eddie Taylor, who died four years ago this week.

Eddie was known throughout our league as the "man with the rattle", as he took his wooden rattle everywhere he went to watch LR, home and away, and LR manager Warren Jones, who knew Eddie from his previous spell with the club, made sure his current squad were aware of the man, the anniversary and his support for LR.

LR's 1-0 win made for a good night all round in the visiting camp, and as the Atherton LR Twitter feed said: "Our manager @WozzaJ5 (Warren Jones) made the players aware of what a legend Eddie was to the club and to go out and do him proud. His rattle would have been spinning tonight".

A win at last for AFC Darwen

It's not been the best of seasons for AFC Darwen, but at least there was a bit of cheer for everyone at the club on Saturday.

After 11 straight defeats, the losing run ended with a 5-3 win at Irlam, the first time that they have scored five goals in a game this season.

It's still a big ask to climb out of the relegation zone, with a 14 point gap between them and safety, but with 18 games to go there's now at least one positive result to build on.
