Quirk fire hat trick

Colin Quirk of Litherland REMYCA turned his side's game with Carlisle City on its head on Saturday, hitting a hat trick in the space of what was recorded as being between the 75th and 77th minutes, resulting in what was hitherto a goalless draw becoming a 3-0 win for Remy.

As we have said before, we have no complete records on goal times for every game in league history going back to 1982, and obviously timings will never be absolutely precise, but Colin's hat trick feat is up there alongside two others we know about and recorded in recent times, scored by the current Widnes joint-manager Kevin Towey.

Kevin scored three times in Barnton's 11-1 win over Whitchurch Alport on Easter Monday 28th March 2016, with the goal times all recorded as being in the 90th minute, and back in October 2011 when he was at Runcorn Linnets, he scored a hat trick in the first four minutes of their game at Stone Dominoes, which finished with the remarkable score of Stone Dominoes 5 Runcorn Linnets 8.

Colin now joins Kevin in the league history books, and their feats will take some beating.

Admirals' ship marked "home win" comes in

Although it's been a tough season for Nelson, there are signs of recovery at Little Wembley as manager Steve Cunningham attempts to steer his side away from the bottom of the table, and the 2-1 win over promotion chasing AFC Blackpool on Saturday gave cause for celebration.

As well being the Admirals' first home league win of the season, it was also their first home league win since 21st January 2017 - 20 home league games ago - when they beat New Mills 7–4.

Having used to the unaccustomed feeling of celebrating a home win, everyone in the Admirals camp will be hoping there will be many more similar experiences to come between now and the end of the season.

Top ten for the Bucks

While Bootle's 10-0 win over AFC Darwen was the eye catching result of the day on Saturday, a glance back at recent history suggests that the result was no real surprise.

On Saturday the Bucks went one better than they did in the corresponding fixture last season, when they won 9-0 on the 4th February 2017, having already won 7-1 at the WEC Anchor Ground on the 10th December 2016.

This season the fixture at Darwen ended in a 4-4 draw back in October, so with that knowledge, a ten goal game between the sides on Saturday should have come as no surprise.

There can't surely be any other fixture between two clubs that has produced as many goals in the space of two seasons.

A Happy New Year for Carl

One man who has started 2018 in the way he finished off the old year is Charnock Richard's goalscoring supremo Carl Grimshaw.

The Charnock striker has scored four goals in his side's first three games of the New Year, with his winner in the 1-0 win over Ashton Athletic on Saturday continuing his tremendous net bulging run of form that has seen him hit the back of the net in 10 of Charnock's last 12 games.

It's good news for Charnock, and bad news for Premier Division defences, that Carl shows no sign of losing his goalscoring touch.

Double strike force on song for the Cobbydalers

Silsden AFC continued their march at the top of the First Division table with a 3-0 win at Daisy Hill on Saturday.

Once again, the Cobbydalers' leading scorer Joseph Gaughan played a notable part in the win, with his two goals in the game taking his tally to 28 for the season.

Along with fellow striker Chris Wademan, Gaughan's ability to hit the back of the net has been a key factor in Silsden's success this season, which is borne out by the fact that out of the 24 league games the Cobbydalers have played, there have only been five games in which at least one of the duo hasn't scored.

It's an impressive display of striking prowess that will be the envy of many clubs around the league.
