Fixtures piling up for 1874

1874 Northwich are gearing up for a busy few months with a hefty backlog of fixtures to come, but joint-manager Paul Bowyer insists that the squad is up for the challenge.

Tuesday night’s game at home to Hanley Town was only the Greens’ 12th league fixture of the season, whereas so far they have played in 18 cup ties, with plenty more to come.

1874 are still involved in four cup competitions – the FA Vase, the Macron Cup, the Mid-Cheshire Cup and the Cheshire Senior Cup – but rather than seeing it as a problem, Paul says that he and fellow manager Wayne Goodison are looking forward to the busy schedule.

“We are the victims of our own success, because we have had so many cup games, but that is fantastic for the club”, said Paul.

“We got further in the FA Cup than we have ever done before, we have gone further in the FA Vase than before and this (fixture pile up) is the knock on effect.

“At the minute it is not a problem, because we could play Saturday and Tuesday for the rest of the season.  The only issue might be if we carry on in the Vase and the League Cup, and maybe get a couple of postponements in the winter on top.

“But it is what it is, you would rather have this situation rather than just playing on Saturdays for the rest of the season.  I think it is a fantastic place for the club to be at, and at the moment we don't see it as a problem”.

As far as the players are concerned, Paul says that every squad member is aware of the key role they have to play for the rest of the season.

“We said to the lads we want to be competitive in every competition after Christmas.  As well as the cups we have some really important league games as well.

“We've got a really good strong squad of 20 players, and they all know that they are all going to be playing, with the amount of games we have got.  We’ve said to them every single one of them is important.

“There were lads not involved on Saturday (against Ashton Athletic) for example, who didn't get into the 16, but they know they will start a large amount of games.

“We've got a squad that is capable of turning over that many games, and I think if you asked any of the players or the fans, you'd take where we are at the moment, rather than not get as far in the FA Cup and FA Vase as we have done.

“These cup runs are the sort of things you remember in seasons to come”.
