Winter's here.....

Well, we have escaped fairly well up to now, but the mixture of sleet, snow, rain and frost that swept over our area towards the end of last week resulted in us being left with the bare bones of a fixture list at the weekend.

Let's draw comfort from the fact that, for many of our clubs, it was the first time they had suffered a postponement this season, which is not bad considering we are only a few days away from December.  And with several games scheduled for this week, if the weather is a bit knider there's plenty of opportunity to catch some live action once again.

Welcome home to a win for Abbey Hey

Going into Saturday, Abbey Hey had won just once in nine home league games this season, a run that would have undoubtedly been giving cause for concern in the home camp.

However, any thoughts of a home jinx seem to have been well and truly blown away, after a 7-1 win over Barnton at the Abbey Stadium.

Abbey's good away record means they are sitting comfortbly in mid-table, so if this latest result gives them their home mojo back, a climb further up the table is well and truly on the cards.

Second half goalscoring Blues

Although their scheduled home game against Hanley Town was postponed on Saturday, Winsford United's 5-1 Monday night win over West Didsbury & Chorlton continued their fine run of home form recently.

In their last four home games, the Blues have scored 15 goals, and somewhat unusually, 11 of those were scored in the second half.  It's a trait that isn't just confined to the St Luke's Barton Stadium either, as the 6-1 win at Burscough in October was notable for the fact all their goals were netted after the break.

There's clearly no lack of stamina or determination in the Blues camp when it comes to finishing games on the front foot.

No blanks from the Bullets

Another team that has their shooting boots polished and ready for action at the moment are Alsager Town, who matched Winsford's record of 15 goals in the last four home games with their 5-2 win over Holker Old Boys on Saturday.

Only on two occasions this season have Alsager scored less than two goals at home, and Saturday's win was the third time they have scored five times in a game at Wood Park since the season began.

It's a formidable record, and one that will keep the Bullets right up in the promotion pack if they can maintain such fine home form.

Cobbydalers march on

After Silsden AFC lost their 100% league record at Holker Old Boys, and then followed it up last midweek with a West Riding County Cup defeat at Tadcaster Albion, many will have been watching out to see if this was the first sign of mid-season wobble for the Cobbydalers.

But normal service was restored on Friday night with a 1-0 win over Nelson which. combined with the weather affecting the games of their nearest rivals at the weekend, means they now have a lead of 16 points at the top of Division One.

Sure, we are not yet halfway through the season. but it will take some effort from anyone in the chasing pack to overhaul Danny Forrest's men by the end of April.
