Converting chances the key for Barlick

After two good wins in their last two games, Barnoldswick Town manager Danny Craig is now looking for his side to start delivering results that match their performances on a consistent basis.
A 4-0 win at Darwen last midweek, and a 5-0 home win at Squires Gate on Saturday came as a welcome boost to Danny, who insists that their inconsistent results up to now don’t reflect the team’s performances in the majority of the games played.
“I personally think that, had we taken the chances we have created, we would be up there challenging”, he said.
“You win some, you lose some, but really the only inconsistency we have had has been in front of goal, and it’s been a case of missed chances in a lot of the games.
“Against Darwen at home, Winsford away and Charnock Richard, those are three games I look at and say we didn’t deserve anything from those games and were beaten by better teams on the day.
“But other games we have dominated and just haven’t taken our chances, it’s as simple as that and it’s been our Achilles heel all season.
“If you look through our squad we have got four or five through the midfield, and the front three who chip in with goals.
“It’s just a case at the minute they have the old Andy Cole syndrome, they need five chances to score one, and against good teams you don’t always get five chances”.
None the less, although results have been frustrating, Danny is encouraged by the way the squad is shaping up, although he says he has always been happy with the personnel at his disposal since he took over in January of this year.
“I inherited a very good squad, so I just felt I had to add a couple of players and build on that.
“So we added Jack Overson at centre half, Joel Melia on the right hand side, and Danny Boyle at the time just came in to add that bit more quality to what was already a good side.
“There were no wholesale changes, apart from losing our goalkeeper to Bootle, but I have brought a lad in from Burnley, Connor King who has been outstanding for us, and I think he is one of the best goalkeepers in the league this season.
“We set off like a house on fire, and competed very well in pre-season, against teams above like Skelmersdale and Bamber Bridge and matched them all the way in pre-season games.
“We won two games in the FA Cup against opposition that people probably thought would turn us over, were very unlucky to go in the third round of that, and were flying.
“Then we had a sticky patch where things didn’t go for us and our confidence went down, and one loss becomes another loss.
“I remember the Runcorn Town game, the first one of the season when we lost 1-0. We should have beaten them, but then five or six games later when we went through a sticky spell I was looking at Runcorn Town top of the league and not having lost a game, and thinking how we played against them.
“The puzzling thing is that we had not really changed things much. We were playing so well and creating chances, just not taking them.
“We were going two or three games without a win but I was sending the same team out and asking the same things of them, because what they were doing was good.
“When it is just confidence in front of goal, I can’t do much about that, as confidence only comes from scoring goals and winning matches. If we are not doing it, we can only send them out again and keep telling them it will come”.
Now, with two good wins under their belts in the past week, Danny is looking for more of the same from his men.
“Results have been inconsistent, but our play and how we go about our business, the professionalism and performances we have delivered have been absolutely fine, I have had no issue with that”, he said.
“We are a good side in this league, we are a match for anyone, although whether we are a match for them over 44 games I don’t know.
“We are always going to have off days, but apart from those games against Darwen, Winsford and Charnock Richard I have been completely happy with how we have played.
“Looking back over the season so far, when we have won games, we have won quite a few 1-0 and 2-1, so winning 4-0 at Darwen and 5-0 against Squires Gate was a bit of a confidence booster, and hopefully we can build on that”.
