Yet more Yellow cup fever
To paraphrase an old saying, there are three certainties in life - death, taxes and cracking cup ties involving Ashton Athletic.
The Yellows were at it again on Saturday, with the latest chapter in their ever lengthening catalogue of recent cup success stories being written with a 1-0 win in the Buildbase FA Vase over 2016 winners, and Northern League table toppers, Morpeth Town.
With Athletic still involved in two other cup competitions as well as the Vase, we await the next cup story with increasing anticipation.
Another fruitful Purps cup away day
Joining Ashton Athletic in the Third Round of the Vase are City of Liverpool, who made the long trip up to Sunderland on Saturday to despatch Ryhope CW out of the competition.
Away days in the national competitions seem to agree with the Purps, who this season have also won at Padiham and drawn at Prescot Cables in the FA Cup (before hammering them 8-2 in the replay) and won a derby clash at AFC Liverpool in the First Round of the Vase.
Manager Simon Burton masterminded some impressive runs in the FA Cup and Vase when he was in charge at Runcorn Town, and it looks like he has brought the magic dust with him to sprinkle around on big cup away days.
A week of mixed emotions for Sandbach
A few short years ago, the idea of Tranmere Rovers hosting Sandbach United in a competitive fixture would have been unthinkable, but as we know, football is a game in which change can happen quickly.
The respective fortunes of both clubs these days meant that they were paired together in the Cheshire Senior Cup and United emerged with one of the biggest results of their historyon Tuesday night, winning 2-1 at Prenton Park. What's more, it was a result achieved on the back of their heaviest defeat of the season, after losing 6-0 at home to Prestwich Heys.
There can't be many teams who will play successive games with such contrasting outcomes, and it certainly galvanised a recovery as United rounded off the week with a 4-2 cup win over Eccleshall on Thursday night before picking a 2-1 at Holker Old Boys in Saturday's league clash.
Steve does the trick for Vics
Following a slow start to the season, things are looking up for Northwich Victoria since the appointment of Steve Wilkes as manager.
After a winless opening three games in charge, Steve has now overseen five wins in seven games plus a penalty shoot out victory over Whitchurch Alport, an impressive turn around given that the team had won just twice in the opening two months of the season.
Five of their next six games are away from home, and the itinerary includes tough trips to Hanley Town, Runcorn Linnets and 1874 Northwich, but Vics can at least head into the programme with some good form under their belts.
Oswestry up and running
Another team who have enjoyed a dramatic change in fortunes of late are FC Oswestry Town, who have banished the bad memories of their nightmare start from memory with a fine run of results.
It's now four wins and a draw from six games, with the only defeat coming at runaway league leaders Silsden AFC - quite a turnaround given that they had suffered 12 defeats in their opening 13 games.
The Shropshiremen's fourth place position in the current form guide table will be tested by four successive away trips after Tuesday night's game at home to Cammell Laird 1907, but the signs are looking good for a continuation of the recent form.
