MACRON PLAYER OF THE MONTH AWARDS

PREMIER DIVISION - CRAIG CAIRNS OF RUNCORN TOWN

It is very unusual for a player to win back to back Player of the Month awards, but it’s hard to deny the goalscoring machine that is Craig Cairns, who had an even better October than September.

Eleven goals scored in seven games showed a return that has fired Runcorn Town to the top of the Premier Division, and he picked up another couple of Man of the Match awards to make it a league high eight for the season.

The month started in disappointing fashion with a 3-0 loss at Bootle, with Jamie Hay and Joel Powell nullifying anything that Runcorn could muster. The only real opportunity he had in the game came at the end of the first half with a shot on the stretch from a Tom Rowlands cross.

Next up was AFC Liverpool with Craig opening the scoring on 13 minutes when he dispossessed the AFC centre back before keeping his composure and slotting past the goalkeeper from the edge of the box. It was a game of very few opportunities for both teams, with Craig’s running causing AFC numerous problems, his performance earning him the Man of the Match award.

Winsford were up next with goalkeeper Mike Langley equal to his early efforts. Craig did open the scoring on 25 minutes though as he converted Dave Forbes’ cross, and then lobbed the keeper for another five minutes into the second half. His hat-trick wouldn’t come, Langley denying him with a great stop and then when he was beaten, he hit the post!

Congleton were up next, the Bears looking to complete the double over Runcorn. There were no goals for Craig on the day, but he did claim two assists. The first was a blocked shot that saw Tom Rowlands tap in to the net and the second displayed his unselfishness, squaring the ball when well placed for Dave Forbes to slot home. The nearest he got on the night was when he beat Ross Heywood only to strike the crossbar.

Ashton Athletic were the next opponents, with Craig scoring twice to make it five goals in five games. He got clear of the defence before rounding the keeper to score in the first half, as well as setting up Dave Forbes whose goal was disallowed for offside.

Craig also saw another effort cleared off the goalline by Sam Bailey, but he made sure of the points with his second when he won the ball in defence and kept his composure to score. Craig’s first hat-trick for the club came in the next game against his old side Cammell Laird 1907 in another Man of the Match performance.

His first was from the spot whilst his accuracy was on display for his second, a low finish into the corner of the net that gave Dave Parkinson no chance. He then saw Parkinson brilliantly save a goalbound effort before slotting home his third from a couple of yards with ten minutes remaining.

Craig’s influence and form in the month were perhaps highlighted against Hallam in the FA Vase, a game which Craig was forced to miss after pulling up in the warm up. Without him Runcorn were lethargic and struggled to create many chances, a 2-1 loss putting them out of the competition.

He recovered for the visit of West Didsbury four days later, with another two goals and . He levelled for Runcorn with a trademark cool finish on 20 minutes, with his constant running opening up opportunities for teammates which they took with aplomb. He also scored Runcorn’s fifth goal of the evening, rounding Andy Robertson and showing great feet before scoring from an acute angle.

The final game of the month saw Craig rescue Runcorn Town in the Macron Cup as he hit the winner against Bacup Borough, his 27th goal of a quite incredible season so far. Brought on as a substitute with 20 minutes remaining and with the scores level at 2-2, he took just 14 minutes to find the net, somehow slotting home from virtually on the goal line to stun Bacup.

DIVISION ONE – CHRIS LOMAX OF WIDNES

In a good month for Widnes, Chris played an important part in his team’s fine form during October, after joining the club from St Helens Town a few weeks earlier.

The opening game of the month was a trip to high-flying Whitchurch Alport, where he opened the scoring with a looping header, and in the 18th minute got his second goal of the game with a shot that took a wicked deflection before nestling in the back of the net. Chris then set up Kevin Towey to win a penalty and in stoppage time completed his hat-trick with a shot into the top corner of the net to wrap up a 5-2 win.

Not surprisingly Chris also won the man of the match award.

The next game was a Sunday afternoon trip to FC Oswestry Town in the Reusch First Division Cup 1st Round. The game was only two minutes old when Chris opened the scoring from a George Lomax pass, and then two minutes added a second, rounding off a fine move.

Then in the 24th minute, he completed his second hat trick in successive games when he raced on to a George Lomax through ball, rounded the keeper and tapped the ball home into a empty net. His performance secured a 4-1 win and a tie in the next round against Prestwich Heys.

Widnes then drew away at Daisy Hill, before winning 2-1 at high flying City of Liverpool and although Chris didn’t score in either game, he played an important role in the team’s displays that helped pick up four useful away points.

His two hat tricks in successive games set Widnes on the way to a good run of form under new manager Joey Dunn, and he will no doubt continue to play an important role in the team’s promotion challenge.

REUSCH GOALKEEPER OF THE MONTH AWARDS

PREMIER DIVISION - ADAM REID OF ATHERTON COLLIERIES

Atherton Colls enjoyed a very good October winning six and drawing a couple in the eight games played. The team were awarded the Premier Division Team of the Month as a reward and a major keep to the success was goalkeeper Adam Reid.

Adam wore the number 1 jersey in all games and let in a meagre 5 goals at a rate of 0.625 per game.

The month started with the team in need of a good display after a bad result at Runcorn Linnets and the first opponents were Maine Road who had slammed in 19 goals in their previous 4 outings. A narrow 1-0 victory ensued but to nil the in form Manchester side was confidence boosting.

Two further clean sheets followed with on the road wins at Ashton Athletic (4-0) and New Mills (5-0) before a brace of home draws Nelson (2-2) and Irlam (1-1). The Month ended with victories over West Didsbury & Chorlton (3-1), Jarrow Roofing BCA (5-0) and Sandbach United (2-1).

Adam is a young keeper who the club signed towards the end of last season following an injury to regular custodian Danny Taberner and he a quality addition to the squad which won the MEN United Cup.

His form has continued this term and in October he played a full part in conceding just a handful of goals. A quiet guy off the paddock but he is the opposite when he crosses the whitewash.

Despite his relatively tender years he marshalls his defence well and when he shouts for the ball his defenders get out of the way. He comes for crosses, his shot stopping is second to none, and his kicking has come in leaps and bounds. He is a big unit and must be an imposing figure for an oncoming forward.

Through October he made some fine saves which tipped games in his team’s favour, and none as a much as the final game of the Month. Sandbach were looking favourites for a Macron Cup 'upset' in the first half, but Adam made numerous saves in the opening 45 to ensure Colls went in level at the interval.

He thoroughly deserves the nomination for October Goalie of the Month.

DIVISION ONE - CRAIG HAYNES OF DAISY HILL

Craig Haynes had a solid October in between the sticks.

Over the month Craig has produced some terrific displays to help ensure the team picked up 11 points from 5 unbeaten games, against tough, in form opposition.

Although the team defended well throughout the month, on the occasions where the opposition created chances Craig made numerous outstanding saves to keep the opposition at bay.

As a team Daisy endured a tough first 20 minutes against City of Liverpool, where Craig pulled off several saves to keep the team level. Following this in the games against Widnes, Stockport Town, Oswestry Town and AFC Blackpool, several point blank saves and one-on-one clearances, including 2 clean sheets in the last 2 games, have seen his stock rise.

When you consider he was an outfield player this time last year, Craig is improving with every game, gaining more and more experience and is becoming a real presence.

This, coupled with his ability to sweep and his outfield skills in distributing the ball, are an added bonus, and he is a worthy winner of the award this month
