Congratulations to Hanley Town, who clinched the Division One title with a 2-0 win over St Helens Town at Prescot Cables’ Valerie Park on Thursday evening.

The Potteries side will now break new ground in playing in the Premier Division for the first time in their history, and the outcome makes up for the heartbreak they suffered last season when they lost in the play off final to AFC Darwen

After the game against St Helens Town was postponed shortly before kick off on its originally scheduled date of Bank Holiday Monday at Brocstedes Park, the latest attempt to play the game was also affected, after Hanley Town were delayed by a traffic incident on the M6, meaning that the game didn’t kick off until 8.45 pm.

But when the match finally got under way, Hanley’s captain and leading scorer Theo Stair stepped up to the mark once more, with two goals to set his side on the way to victory and the title.

Hanley Town manager Dean Owen admitted that they hadn't had ideal preparation for such an important game, but it all worked out in the end.

"It was hard work getting the ground, and obviously three hours on a coach isn't ideal, and we did make a bit of a slow start", he said.  "But we stepped it up in the second half and did what we had to do to get the win.

"The lads have been great, they have done me and the club proud.

"Our main aim at the start of the season was to get promotion, and it's mission accomplished.  We've now done the job of picking up the title, so from here we go on and start planning for next year.

"We know it's going to be tough, but we will put a lot of hard work in pre-season, and we will do our best to make an impact in the Premier Division".
