A hard day's work by a team of volunteers was needed at Colne on Wednesday, to ensure the game against Nelson went ahead after the club was targeted by vandals.

The club house and tea bar suffered extensive damage in the attack, items were stolen and glass bottles smashed on the pitch.

Colne Press Officer Dave Priestley described the scene and the work that was needed.

"At 8am on Wednesday morning we received a phone call from the police to tell us of a break in at our ground.  When we got there we were faced with a scene of destruction in our clubhouse and also our tea bar.

"Local yobs had used a sledge hammer and steel piping to smash their way in through the toughened glass windows of the bar after prising off the wooden shutters.  Once inside they had carried out wanton vandalism leaving the place in one hell of a mess and throwing bottles onto the pitch, smashing them in the process.

"They stole our CCTV recording unit which had recently been installed but was not yet fully operational.

"At the other corner of the ground they had managed to force off the serving hatch even though it is reinforced with a steel plate and again once inside caused as much damage as possible spraying tomato ketchup and bags of sugar everywhere, and helping themselves to the burgers and chocolate bars.

"Our first thoughts were that our local derby against Nelson that evening would have to be postponed but once the news went out on Twitter and Facebook we received many offers of help and about a dozen people turned up from all over to lend a hand.

"Our Vice Chairman Richard Harries did a great job fitting temporary shuttering after removing the broken glass while others got busy with the cleaning. It took all day but thanks to a great team effort the game was able to go ahead in the evening and we were rewarded with a crowd of 415 spectators".
