Former Widnes forward Ben Tollitt has signed a professional contract with SkyBet League Two side Portsmouth, following a successful trial.

Tollitt has signed a one-year contract with an option for a further year, after impressing manager Paul Cook as the 2008 FA Cup winners drew 1-1 with Havant & Waterlooville in a pre-season friendly on Saturday.

Tollitt becomes the first former Widnes player to sign professional contract terms with a club. However, he becomes the second former player to make the grade at National League Level and above following striker Connor McCarthy, who signed a semi-professional contract with Vanarama National League side Southport in June after initially signing for the club on non-contract terms in February.

Tollitt joined Widnes in 2013 following his release by Everton as a teenager and went on to nail down a place in Steve Hill's side. His form last season earned Tollitt a dual-registration contract with Northern Premier League side Skelmersdale United for the remainder of the campaign.

Tollitt made 19 appearances for the club last season, scoring 10 goals.

Widnes manager Steve Hill was full of praise for his former player and wished Tollitt nothing but the best as he prepares to begin his career in the Football League.

“I’m absolutely made up for the lad. There’s lots of potential in him and we have always saw that in Ben. I’m sure he’ll go on to do well down at Pompey and we’re all rooting for him.”
