Litherland REMYCA were delighted to welcome Sue Smith, the Doncaster Rovers Belles and former England Women’s international footballer, who joined them for a girls team coaching session at South Sefton Sixth Form College last week.

Sue's visit was arranged through her ambassadorial role with Sporting Champions, which aims to inspire and motivate girls and ladies to take part in organised football and sports activity.

Sue spent a couple of hours with the Litherland REMYCA Girls team with Head of Youth Development, Colin Begbie and structured a coaching session focusing on fitness, technical skills, agility and fun.

After the session Sue talked with Colin about the development of the Litherland REMYCA Girls and open aged women’s teams, which the club are looking to set up in the coming season, and have been training hard in readiness for it.

Sue also spoke with the Club's Press Officer Gary Langley about her visit, and her role with the Sporting Champions Organisation.

“It’s been great to get over to represent Sporting Champions, host a coaching session with the Litherland REMYCA Girls team", she said.

"Along with Colin (Begbie) our aim is to show them that keeping fit and active can be fun. I go to lots of schools, teams and young persons organisations to do this and it’s great when you have a lot of girls here and it’s been a really good session with them.

"These girls have good technical ability and helping in structuring these sessions is great, as you see the team spirit and enthusiasm come through. The girls here drive each other on, it doesn’t matter about any difference in ability, they are learning as a group and that is a lot about what Sporting Champions is about.

“I have been involved with the Sporting Champions organisation for around ten years now.  It’s something that came about when I was playing international football and Sport England came along and asked me to get involved.

"It’s something I have continued to be involved with, and it’s something I’m passionate about. It's seen me get involved in all sorts of weird and wonderful activities such as coaching, cheerleading and all sorts of great activities to inspire young people to get involved, keep active and stay fit and healthy.

“I love coming to clubs like Litherland REMYCA, grassroots level is where it all starts. Clubs like this are essential to the future of the game, it’s where access to playing football starts for so many people.  For many, this is their first involvement in organised football, playing, coaching or becoming one of the many volunteers for whom without the game just wouldn’t happen.

"I, like many players, feel that we should all be giving something back into the sport.  Events like this give us a channel to show our passion for the game, and if we can pass some of that back on to kids like these then that’s a real positive.

"I’d like to thank Colin Begbie and Joe Ryan at the Liverpool County FA Youth Council for inviting me over here on behalf of Sporting Chance, and I wish the girls and the Ladies sides all the best for the future".
