Weekend Round Up

While the Premier Division clubs focussed on league business, the Division One clubs took part in the opening round of this season’s newly named Men United Cup at the weekend.

In the Premier Division, Runcorn Linnets kept their unbeaten run going at the top of the table, but had to come from two goals down to edge past Silsden with a late winner to seal a 3-2 win.

Two goals from Zack Dale established a 2-0 half time lead for Silsden, but Martin Crowder and Kevin Towey penalty brought Linnets back on level terms early in the second half, before Franny Smith secured the points two minutes from time.

AFC Liverpool stay in second place after two goals in the opening six minutes from Ryan Cox and James Robinson set them on the road to a 3-0 win over Bacup & Rossendale Borough.  Nathan Valentine grabbed a third with 15 minutes to go.

Ashton Athletic are third thanks to a Michael Leach goal earning them a 1-0 win over Abbey Hey, but fourth placed Glossop North End left it late to overcome Colne 2-1 at Surrey Street.  Kieran Lugsden gave the Hillmen a half time lead, but a Danny Boyle goal on 69 minutes pulled Colne back on level terms, before a late Lee Blackshaw penalty saw Glossop through to victory.

Maine Road continued their good form and moved into sixth place with Josh Harper’s first half goal earning them a 1-0 win at Runcorn Town.  1874 Northwich are one place behind Road, after a 2-0 win at West Didsbury & Chorlton, the goals from Michael Brandon and Danny Thomas.

Gareth Peat contributed two goals in Nelson’s convincing 5-1 win at Stockport Sports, and after going a goal down at home to bottom of the table AFC Blackpool, a hat trick from Tom Peterson ensured that Bootle collected the points with a 3-1 win.

Two goals in the last five minutes helped Winsford United to a 3-0 win over St Helens Town, Barnoldswick Town remain just above the relegation zone after a 3-1 home defeat to Congleton Town.

Squires Gate were the highest scorers of the day, bouncing back from their midweek disappointment in the FA Cup to romp to a 7-2 win over Alsager Town, Jake Forshaw grabbing a second half hat trick.

In the Men United Cup 1st Round, there was no shortage of entertainment in the first half of the game between Ashton Town and Chadderton, with Town establishing a 4-2 half time lead at the break.  Two more goals in the second half saw Town eventually win 6-2, Sean Robinson and Daniel Barrie both scoring once in each half.

There were four away wins , with James Ludgate’s goal seeing Widnes to a 1-0 win at Barnton, and two late strikes from Liam Smith helped Rochdale Town to a 3-1 win at Eccleshall.

A double from Paul Coote helped AFC Darwen to a 3-0 win at Holker Old Boys, and Wigan Robin Park lost 3-2 at home to Hanley Town.   

Home wins of 4-1 were recorded by Cammell Laird 1907 over Northwich Flixton Villa and by Irlam against Litherland REMYCA.  Craig Cairns scored twice in teh last two minutes for Lairds and Jordan Icely grabbed a double for Irlam.

Two games a few miles apart were settled after extra time.

Goals in extra time from leading scorers Mark Truffas and Mark Battersby helped Atherton Collieries edge a 4-2 win over Cheadle Town, and Simon Farrell’s goal six minutes from the end of extra time saw Daisy Hill’s good run of form continue with a 2-1 win over Atherton LR.
